Blaine Nisson gets send off Tuesday

A farewell party for Blaine Nisson, twice interim president of Clark College, who this week officially became president of Umpqua Community College, is at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 in the Gaiser Hall Student Center on the Clark College campus. Nisson had been vice president of student affairs at the college after the arrival of Wayne Branch as president in 2003.

Nisson, who has been in higher education for over 30 years, earned his doctorate in education in 2003 from Oregon State University, the same year he was graduated from Leadership Clark County. He succeeds David Beyer at Umpqua. Beyer, who had been Clark College president on a one-year contract for the 2002-03 year. Beyer is moving on to become president of Wenatchee Community College.

It was through Leadership Clark County that Nisson became co-chair of the board of directors of the Southwest Washington Center for the Arts, a group trying to create an arts center in Clark County.

Clark College vice president of instruction Roberto Gutierrez has been named to take Nisson’s place on the arts board.

For additional information on Nisson’s sendoff, call Cindi Olson, 992-2103.

Vancouver’s HOSTS
gets federal recognition

The Vancouver mentoring program HOSTS, was specifically identified as a model in the Improving Education Results for Children with Disabilities ACT, which passed Congress today, U.S. Rep. Brian Baird (D-3) reports.

HOSTS, an acronym for Help One Student to Succeed, was founded in Vancouver in 1971 by former Vancouver teacher Bill Gibbons. For three decades HOSTS has delivered structured mentoring programs to more than a million children in grades K through 12, providing personalized instruction for improving reading, writing, vocabulary, math and critical thinking and study skills.

Baird says official recognition of HOSTS in the bill gives the organization clout with federal grants.
