Vancouver’s HOSTS
gets federal recognition
The Vancouver mentoring program HOSTS, was specifically
identified as a model in the Improving Education Results for Children with
Disabilities ACT, which passed Congress today, U.S. Rep.
Brian Baird (D-3) reports.
HOSTS, an acronym for Help One Student to Succeed, was
founded in Vancouver in 1971 by former Vancouver teacher
Bill Gibbons. For three decades HOSTS has
delivered structured mentoring programs to more than a million children in
grades K through 12, providing personalized instruction for improving reading,
writing, vocabulary, math and critical thinking and study skills.
Baird says official recognition of HOSTS in the bill
gives the organization clout with federal grants.
