First Independent Bank
hires, promotes


       Kristine Davis                 Terry Metz

      Kristine M. Davis has been appointed director of Internal Audits & Compliance at First Independent Bank. Davis will be responsible for overseeing internal audit and compliance functions of the bank, its subsidiaries and its 23 local offices.

      Davis  was formerly vice president and compliance officer at Umpqua Bank. She is a graduate of Portland State University and is a certified internal auditor, regulatory compliance manager, and financial services auditor. Davis is a member of the Oregon Bankers’ Association Compliance Committee and the Southern Oregon Compliance Officer Organization.

      Terry Metz has been promoted to vice president of First Independent’s Credit Administration Department.

      Metz, a graduate of Portland State University, has been with First Independent since 2002. He previously was assistant vice president and credit review manager in the bank’s Loan Service Center.


Vancouver Lake partnership holding
second meeting Wednesday

The newly formed Vancouver Lake Watershed Partnership is holding its second public meeting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, in Port of Vancouver offices at 3103 Lower River Road. The partnership which comprises 11 governmental agencies and nine individuals, will be discussing the history of the watershed and will hear a presentation on the Vancouver Lake flushing channel.

The organization, formed late last year after fears were expressed that the lowland lake may not survive without outside intervention, is charged with reviewing threats to the future of the lake and determining a course of action for its future.

Governmental agency members of the partnership are as follows: Port of Vancouver, City of Vancouver Public Works, Clark County Public Works, Vancouver-Clark Parks & Recreation, Clark County Health Department, Port of Ridgefield, Clark Public Utilities, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the state departments of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Fish & Wildlife.

Fire-walking teacher named Phoenix
University campus college chair

James Whitley has been appointed campus college chair for undergraduate business for the Oregon campuses of the University of Phoenix. Whitley, who has walked over hot coals more than 100 times, and who is known for leading students in a fire walk at the conclusion of his seminars, has been a business instructor for the university since 2000.

Whitley will continue to teach in the classroom and online as well as provide oversight for the undergraduate business school, which includes the Vancouver campus.

Richard Curtis appointed
assistant Republican whip

Richard Curtis, freshman Republican representative from the 18th District, has been appointed to assistant Republican whip for the 43 Republican members in the state House of Representatives..

Curtis, who is also a La Center councilmember, has been appointed to the House Education and Transportation Committees. He also serves as the ranking Republican on the House Health Care Committee.

Kaiser Permanente expects record
employee turnout to distribute food

More than 400 Kaiser Permanente employees are expected to show up at the Oregon Food Bank distribution center at 7900 SE 33rd Avenue, Portland, at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, to assist in packaging and distribution of more than 250,000 pounds of food to Oregon Food Bank clients.

That number would be a record for Kaiser Permanente, which annually works to help the food bank with its distribution on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In addition to money and food donated by employees, Kaiser Permanente made a $45,000 donation to buy 35,000 pounds of salmon, a protein-rich food.

The Oregon Food Bank provides food for 870 hunger-relief organizations in Oregon and Clark County.

Prospective automotive technology
students, public to tour Clark College

Prospective automotive technology students and the public is invited to tour Clark College’s award-winning, nationally recognized Automotive Technology facilities from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the Fort Vancouver Way campus.

Students from the Clark County Skills Center and area high schools have already signed up for the career education day.

In 2002 Clark’s program won the top national award given by the Automotive Industry Planning Council’s Excellence Award program. The automotive program is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Educational Foundation and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
