Oncologist prepping medical center
on new cancer-treating technology

    Christopher Hoffelt                      Shawn He

Southwest Washington Medical Center has hired two new oncologists, one of whom, radiation oncologist S. Christopher Hoffelt, was part of the team at Baltimore’s Sinai Hospital that introduced Cyberknife technology for tumor treatments.

In addition to Hoffelt, the medical center has added medical oncologist Shawn He to the SWMC’s cancer center team.

The Cyberknife process is more precise than traditional radiation technology, according to Hoffelt. When the Cyberknife equipment is in place in mid-year, Southwest Washington Medical Center will be first in the Vancouver-Portland metropolitan area to introduce the new technology and the first hospital between Seattle and San Francisco to use the technology on cancer patients.

Hoffelt, a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, completed his residency in radiation oncology at Oregon Health & Science University. He has experience in prostate, breast and gynecologic brachytherapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy. Hoffelt will also be on the faculty at OHSU.

Medical oncologist, Shawn He, who joined the Vancouver Clinic in 2005, will practice at the SWMC Cancer Center. He completed his residency and fellowship in oncology at the Cleveland Clinic and practiced in Cleveland before moving to Vancouver.
