teaming up to streamline operations

Nick Schiller, medical director of the Southwest Washington Regional Surgery Center at Southwest Washington Medical Center, has been appointed medical director of surgical services at SWMC, the largest medical center in southern Washington.

Schiller, a member of Vancouver’s Columbia Anesthesia Group, is also chair of the medical center’s Anesthesia Department and president elect of SWMC’s medical staff. Schiller earned his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University, where he also completed his anesthesia residency.

Schiller will work with the medical center’s new director of Perioperative Services, Carol Hammes, a former Air Force medical operations and planning officer.

Schiller and Hammes are charged with improving patient care and operating procedure turnaround times at the 360-bed medical center.

Nascom moves to Port of Kalama

Security switch manufacturer Nascom Inc. has consolidated its Newberg, Ore., and Vancouver operations at the Port of Kalama. The company’s 30 employees this month moved into a 11,500-square-feet of a newly completed $1.5 million building in the port’s Kalama River Industrial Park.

The company sells over 2.5 million magnetic switches annually through 2,000 installers nationwide, according to Nascom president and founder Mike Davenport.

Public hearing to follow open house on
amended I-5 Battle Ground interchang
e

The state Department of Transportation is holding an open house, on the revised Interstate 5, Highway 502 interchange serving the Battle Ground area, at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 24, and then opens a public hearing on the matter at 6 p.m. The open house and hearing are in the DOT regional headquarters, 11018 NE 51st Circle, just off NE 112th Avenue and Highway 500.

The revised plan saves about $1 million from preliminary estimates for the total $34 million interchange, which is one of the state’s “nickel” projects, being financed primarily by a five-cent tax per gallon of gasoline.

The interchange, designed to speed traffic between Interstate 5 and 219th Street, which is also state Highway 502, offers Battle Ground commuters access to I-5 both north and south. Those intending to travel north on I-5, however, would be required to make a left-hand turn from 219th Street.

Construction is expected to begin in 2007, and completion is expected in 2009.
