Cathlapotle plankhouse seven-day
grand opening begins Wednesday
Although Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery first
saw Cathlapotle plank houses on Nov. 5, 1805, it wasn’t until the explorers were
on their way back from the Pacific Ocean, March 29, 1806, that the corps stopped
for two days to “trade” with the Chinook Indians in the village of an estimated
800 people at what is now Ridgefield. Archaeological research suggests that
Cathlapotle was continuously inhabited for at least 2,000 years, and possibly
5,000 years or longer.
A seven-day open house, beginning Wednesday, March 30,
signals the opening of a replica of one of the long houses that was among
several in the village 200 years ago.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has overseen a
$500,000 construction project that has created a replica of one of several
plankhouses seen by Lewis and Clark.
The Fish and Wildlife Service, which oversees the
Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge will be showing off the new tourist
attraction through Sunday, April 3.
The plankhouse is just north of Ridgefield in the Carty
Unit of the wildlife refuge and can be reached by going north on Main Street and
crossing the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks at the entrance of the
refuge. For further information, call 887-4106,
or go to

YWCA offering opportunities to volunteer
The YWCA of Clark County has scores of adult volunteer
positions open and is actively trying to fill them, reports YWCA spokesperson
Al Flory.
Flory says volunteers are needed to serve as advocates
for those suffering the pain of sexual abuse, to mentor young people emerging
from foster care, to facilitate support groups for domestic violence victims and
to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children who are in the
court system.
Other opportunities include helping in pre-school
classrooms, visiting women in jail, and volunteering on YWCA committees for
fundraising and staff activities.
A volunteer orientation program is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Tuesday, April 12, in the YWCA Community Room, 3609 Main Street. For further
information, call Flory at
696-0167.
Vancouver
School District
senior projects need judging
As a requirement for graduation from high school,
Vancouver School District seniors must complete acceptable senior projects. The
district is seeking hundreds of volunteers to sit on panels to judge the more
than 1,800 senior projects expected to be completed this year.
Senior projects reports show how students integrate
knowledge and skills gained through the high school experience with
community-based exploration and service. Many of the senior projects involve
impressive presentations, including Power Point presentations.
Only a few hours are required from each volunteer, who
will be asked to serve at judging sessions in May and June.
Volunteering as a panel judge is a wonderful way to see
impressive student work, assist local high schools and learn about interesting
topics, according to Tammy Friehauf, Fort
Vancouver High School spokesperson.
Prospective volunteers are asked to call Friehauf at
313-4029, or
Missy Hallead, Columbia River High
School, 313-3908,
Lynn Fransen, Hudson’s Bay High School,
313-4400, or
Dock Blastic, Skyview High School,
313-4200.
