Penguin Student Union
dedication is Wednesday
Paid mostly through student fees, the Clark College
Penguin Student Union, a $9.9 million addition to Gaiser Hall, will be dedicated
at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 13. Official dedicators will be
Micah West, president of the Associated
Students of Clark College, college president
Wayne Branch, and chair of the college board of trustees
Sue Fratt.
The three-floor Penguin Student Union opens at 10 a.m.
At 2 p.m. artist Lucinda
Parker will discuss her charcoal drawings on display in the Archer
Gallery, which is located on the lower level of the student union building. At
3:30 p.m. the donor wall in the gallery will be rededicated.
Former Clark College Alumni Association presidents
Jerry McGee and
Ceci Ryan Smith will dedicate a wall in
honoring outstanding Clark College alumni. As part of the dedication ceremony
the 2005 Outstanding Alumni honorees will be introduced.
At 5 p.m. members of the ASCC will unveil a dedication
plaque in the Penguin Student Lounge.
On the main level of the nearly 52,000-square-foot
addition to Gaiser Hall are study and lounge areas, a game room, café,
performance area and the Student Life office. The upper level contains
conference and meeting rooms and is the office of the student newspaper,
The Independent.
According to Branch, in 2001 students voted to approve a
fee of $2 per credit hour to help pay for a student union building. This source
alone covered nearly $8 million of the total cost of the student union. The
students also raised over $$350,000 for furnishings in the building, and student
technology fees paid for audio/visual equipment, including a wireless network
system and computers.
