Registration for
Vancouver’s World War II
commemoration being taken on-line
With
between 50,000 and 100,000 visitors expected for Vancouver’s August
commemoration of World War II, the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust is
accepting registrations on its newly launched website,
www.americassalute.org.
Vancouver is one of six U.S. cities
selected by the Department of Defense to host regional commemorations. The
cities are Boston, Chicago, San Antonio, San Diego and Tampa, but Vancouver’s
three-day event is the largest of them all, according to
Elson Strahan, president of VNHRT.
Events so far developed include a
black-tie dinner for 1,000 in the Hilton Vancouver Convention Center, a hangar
dance at Pearson Air Museum, an outdoor Celebrate Freedom Concert and fireworks
display, a mess hall-style pancake breakfast, military aircraft flyovers,
vintage aircraft displays, reunions, old-time military encampments and even a
Red Cross blood drive.
A speaker is yet to be selected for
the annual Gen. George C. Marshall Lecture, which is scheduled during the event.
Events are scheduled for Friday
through Sunday, Aug. 26 through 28, and will honor not only World War II
veterans but veterans of all ages and branches of the service. In addition,
civilians who served their country on the home front will also be honored.
Registration is open to all persons,
veterans as well as non-veterans and can be made either going to the website or
by calling Nancy Link, VNHRT tourism and
events manager, 992-1825.

Freedom Salute sponsorship opportunities, call
