A reception for Steve and Jan Oliva, who are Vancouver’s First Citizens for 2005, will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 23, in the new Hilton Vancouver Hotel and the Vancouver Convention Center. A formal program and award presentation begins at 5:15 p.m. The Olivas, owners of High-School Pharmacy, are noted for their broad-based community service. “Their contributions flow in tandem,” says former Vancouver Mayor Bruce Hagensen, a recipient of the First Citizen Award in 1995, and chair of the First Citizen Selection Committee. Hagensen adds, “Whether it is their efforts on the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District bond initiative or their leadership at the Southwest Washington Medical Center, Steve and Jan work as a team. We couldn’t honor one without honoring the other.” Sponsors of the annual First Citizen Award are Bank of Clark County, The Columbian, Leadership Clark County, and The Community Foundation. Washingtonians present jazz The Duke Ellington School of the Arts Jazz Orchestra, The New Washingtonians, will present an evening of jazz standards, big band, bebop and contemporary jazz at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 400 S. Andresen Road. Directed by Davey Yarborough, the New Washingtonians tour the United States and Europe and perform regularly in the Kennedy Center and the White House. Vancouver concert series, Bravo! Kissinger is also artistic director for the Wine & Jazz Festival.
