The federal Land and Water Conservation Fund will match $500,000 in federal funds for development of Frenchman’s Bar Regional Park on the Columbia River, U.S. Rep. Brian Baird (D-3rd) announced today. According to Jeroen Kok, senior planner for Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, the new facilities will include several large picnic shelters that can accommodate family picnics and weddings, a water play feature and an expanded trail system. In addition, additional shower and bathroom facilities will be added. Frenchman’s Bar is a 120-acre park along the Columbia River, two miles west of Vancouver. 100 citations By 2:30 a.m. today Vancouver police has issued over 100 fireworks citations and fines soared to $42,250, according to Vancouver fire marshal Jim Crawford. The city had increased its public education and enforcement efforts this year to address community concerns about misuse of fireworks. Fireworks patrols will continue today and tonight. After 11 p.m. tonight it will be illegal to use fireworks in the city until June 28, 2006, according to Crawford. Amphitheater

Naturally Beautiful The final day to enter the Naturally Beautiful Backyard contest sponsored by Clark County Solid Waste is Wednesday, July 6. The contest is open only to gardeners who use pesticide-free gardening methods and earth-friendly practices, such as composting and conserving water. The contest is also open to front yards. The contest winner will have his or her garden featured in The Columbian. Prizes will also be awarded to the three runner-up gardeners. People Kyle Brown and Jessica Stalberger have been promoted to public involvement project managers at the JD White Company. Brown, a Portland State University graduate, joined the company in 2000 as research project assistant.
