Jeanne Harris, serving her 10th year as a member of the Vancouver City Council, today announced that she is a candidate for reelection. Thus far, two of the four city council officials up for election this year have announced their intentions. Mayor Royce Pollard is the other. The other two positions on the council that are up for election are held by Jeanne Stewart and Pat Jollota. Harris says, “I want to see the city continue to re-invent itself… Let’s imagine a waterfront with shops and restaurants and open space to enjoy the river.” Ordinarily, only non-partisan offices are on the ballot during this off-year election, but the office of Clark County commissioner, District 3, held on appointment by Steve Stuart, is on the ballot. Democrat Stuart has announced he is running for the office and so has former state representative Republican Tom Mielke. The period for officially filing for public office is Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29. While the primary election is Tuesday, Sept. 20, the election will be conducted entirely by mail ballots. Voting is expected to begin late in August, after the Clark County Elections Department mails ballots to all registered voters. Kaiser building
$24 million Kaiser Permanente is breaking ground on a $24 million, two-story medical office in Orchards to serve its growing membership in northern and eastern Clark County, reports Bruce Fong, senior project manager.
To be completed next summer, the new office will be the fifth primary medical care office in Clark County. Kaiser Permanente also operates a specialty care office and two dental offices in the county. The group health care organization serves over 465,000 people in southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon. Zimmer Gunsul Frasca, Portland architects, designed the facility with assistance from a design team of doctors, nurses and other Kaiser staff. The building will be on 8.7 acres at the corner of Fourth Plain Boulevard and NW 137th Avenue. A Kihs is not just a Kihs Adding to its already tarnished escutcheon, the Daily Insider has once again egregiously erred in a major news story. We not only quoted Tami Kihs in a story about the Pearson USO-style Hangar Dance coming in August as part of the Vancouver’s three-day World War II celebration, we gave her the title of Pearson Air Museum director. Tami, indeed, is also a public person in Vancouver. She has worked for Clark County and the City of Vancouver, and currently is an emergency management coordinator for the City of Vancouver. The Kihs who really is Pearson Air Museum director is Kyle Kihs. The editor apologizes to Mr. and Mrs. Kihs. People Elaine Niemi has been appointed job coach for Partners in Careers, a private nonprofit agency serving Clark County job-seekers and employers. Niemi will assist job-seekers with disabilities in PIC’s expanding vocational rehabilitation program. Previously, she had been an employment specialist with Columbia River Mental Health Services. PIC’s vocational rehabilitation services are funded by the state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, state Department of Services for the Blind, and the Clark County Department of Community Services. Calendar The speaker for the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Archaeology Speaker Series at 7 p.m. this evening, in the Pearson Air Museum auditorium, is the National Park Services’ Douglas Wilson.
