Mike Heywood will run for Jeanne
Stewart’s position on city council

Mike Heywood reports that he will be a candidate for the Vancouver City Council position held by Jeanne Stewart.

He will make his announcement in a meeting with supporters and interested voters at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 15, at the Slocum House at the southwest corner of Esther Short Park in downtown Vancouver.

Heywood, a former Columbian editorial writer, sought an appointment to the city council to succeed the position left vacant by the resignation of Jim Moeller in 2003, and he also unsuccessfully ran for the position last year against appointee Tim Leavitt.

Heywood is a member of the Vancouver Planning Commission, is president of the Carter Park Neighborhood Association and is president of the Slocum House Theatre Co., and he is a former member of the Vancouver Charter Review Committee. Editor of the Clark County Democratic newsletter, Heywood also writes for The Vanguard and the Vancouver Business Journal. He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and is a graduate of the University of Utah.

Clark College to field women’s softball team

Clark College will field a varsity women’s softball team next spring, reports Clark’s athletic director Lisa Quednow-Bickler, who will also coach the team.

Quednow-Bickler says the team is expected to have a full roster of 18 players. The Clark team will compete in the South Division of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. The NWAACC is a 28-team league and includes Mt. Hood, Chemeketa and Lower Columbia Community Colleges.

The team will compete in a new softball complex at Hudson’s Bay High School, which is being developed in a partnership between Clark and the Vancouver School District.

Quednow says that great partnerships have made this possible. She says the college has become a partner with the school district to develop the field. The Associated Students of Clark College is financing the team’s travel, equipment and other costs.

According to college president Wayne Branch, the college’s Penguin Athletic Club sought the college’s interest in establishing this program. “We are happy that the college, working with various partners and stakeholders is able to address a community interest, and provide exciting new opportunities for our students.”

The first home game is expected to take place next March.
