Kate Budd named coordinator
for the Council for the Homeless

Kate Budd has been appointed emergency shelter clearinghouse coordinator for the Council for the Homeless.

Budd has several years’ experience working in homeless management and shelter operations. She earned a masters degree in social work from Eastern Washington University.

The council, formed in 1998, is charged with mobilizing the community to end homelessness in Clark County.

Budd will manage the Clark County Emergency Shelter Hotline and she will be responsible for the council’s Voice Mail Program, which provides free voice mail services for 600 homeless and phoneless people in the Clark County.  The emergency shelter hotline is manned seven days a week by 20 volunteers, who help assist homeless people find shelter in the county.

National Piper airplane convention
bringing planes to Pearson Field

The first of nearly 100 Piper short-wing airplanes will begin arriving at Pearson Field Saturday as more than 250 persons begin showing up for a four-day national convention of Piper aircraft owners being held at the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay, Monday, July 18, through Thursday, July 21.

While this is not an air show, the public may view the aircraft at Pearson Field.

The Short Wing Piper Club is a group of aviation enthusiasts who own, fly or admire the five best known Piper Aircraft, Clipper, Vagabond, Pacer, Ti-Pacer and Colt, built between 1948 and 1963.

Transportation plans on
display at Vancouver mall

Transportation plans by Vancouver, Clark County and the Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council are being displayed and discussed at the Westfield Shoppingtown Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 16.

Transportation staffers will be on hand with plans in the lower level Sears Court in the shopping center.

The city and county are developing their 2006-2011 transportation improvement programs. The transportation council is developing the Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Program, a three-year regional program that includes significant projects within Clark County, including C-TRAN projects and state Department of Transportation projects.

Battle Ground’s Harvest Days
continue through Sunday

Battle Ground’s annual Harvest Days, which features two parades, a talent show, street dance, lawnmower racing, pie baking contest and a beer garden continues through Sunday, July 17. Most events are along Main Street, but many children’s activities are at the Fairgrounds Park.

Saturday, July 16, begins at 6:30 a.m. in the Chamber of Commerce Building with the annual Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast. The two-hour grand parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, at 5th Avenue and W Main Street, and travels east. Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts perform at 8:30 Saturday evening for the free street dance.

Sunday, July 17, events include the children’s parade at 1 p.m. and the lawnmower racing event in the Commerce Center just off 199th Street.

Vancouver’s Captain Vancouver statue will be dedicated at its permanent location at 6th and Esther Street traffic circle near Esther Short Park at 10 a.m. Saturday. The dedicators are Mayor Royce Pollard, Avril Massey, chair of the Captain Vancouver Committee, and Jim DeMetro, the artist who created the larger than life-sized statue. The statue had been in a temporary location at City Hall for the past six years. n A highlight of the Relay for Life Cancer Fund Raising Walk at Columbia River High School this week end is the MissTer relay from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 16. Men, dressed as women will be soliciting donations for the fight against cancer. n The Fort Vancouver Regional Library District is holding a special meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, July 18, in the main library at 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard.
