The medical center project adds 154 private patient rooms, 15 operating suites and a new heart and vascular center to the medical center’s Mill Plain Campus. The 307,000-square-foot, $105 million project is under contract to Hoffman-Andersen of Washington.

The second largest construction project of the year is North Pointe Estates, Vancouver, a 30-acre planned community with 146 home sites. Owner and general contractor is Pacific Lifestyle Homes. The project is valued at $35.4 million.

The county’s center for community health on the Veterans Administration campus just off Fourth Plain Boulevard was recognized as the third largest construction project. The $28.5 million project within a 176,000-square-foot, four-story building will house Clark County Health Department and Clark County Department of Community Services offices and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs facilities, as well as Clark County Council on Alcohol and Drugs, Mental Health Northwest, and Northwest Recovery Center facilities.

The fourth largest project is Evergreen Public Schools’ $17.5 million Covington Middle School, opening this fall and under contract to Todd Construction.

The Vancouver Clinic’s 91,000-square-foot clinic adjacent to the new Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital was named the fifth largest construction project for 2005. General contractor is The Neenan Company.

Those projects will be featured in the business journal’s Top Projects 2005 magazine.

Candidates’ filing period begins Monday

Next week, candidates for public offices in Clark County must file their intentions with the county the Elections Department, 1408 Franklin Street. The week-long filing period begins at 8 a.m. Monday, July 25. Filing will continue during regular work hours through 5 p.m. Friday, July 29.

There is only one partisan race this year and that is for county commissioner, District 3, a position now held by Steve Stuart, who was appointed in December 2004, to hold the office until the next regular election. The office was vacated by Craig Pridemore, who after resigning was elected 49th District state senator.

Stuart, a Democrat, already announced he is a candidate for the office, which represents most of the City of Vancouver. Republican Tom Mielke, a former state representative from the 18th District, has also announced he is a candidate for the commissioner post.

Although there are a slew of city council, school board, fire district, and nonpartisan offices open this year, the Sept. 20 primary ballot may be pretty sparse because unless three or more people file for the same office a primary election isn’t held. And unless someone else files for the county commissioner position, the two announced candidates will appear only on the November 4 general election ballots.

Also on the ballot is the C-TRAN issue asking voters to approve a 0.2 percent sales increase to restore services being curtailed because of the elimination of automobile excise tax support for transit agencies in the state.

The primary election should get a pretty good turnout because it will be conducted entirely by mail-in ballots. Ballots should be in the mail by the end of August.

The $300 camp fee includes all field trips and daily lunches.
