Two mayors and
two counselors Apart from the .2 percent sales tax request by C-TRAN, fighting for its life to maintain mass transit service in Clark County, the otherwise dull Sept. 20 primary election will be enlivened by contests for the mayors of Vancouver and Yacolt, and one city council race each in Vancouver and Woodland. Plus, one Camas School District position. Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard faces David E. Kallstrom and Charles P. Stemper. Kallstrom has unsuccessfully challenged Pollard in nearly every one of his five times to the polls. It will be Stemper’s first try for a Vancouver elective office. Yacolt has a three-way race for mayor also. Pilar “Kit” Raines, Thom Holyk and Joe Warren each are running for the office of mayor, which will become vacant in 2006. Vancouver city councilwoman Jeanne Stewart is being challenged by Mike Heywood and Eric Olmsted. Three persons have filed for the District 4 position on the Camas School District board held by appointee Doug Quinn. In addition to Quinn, they are Donna Roberge and John Slivarich. The September 20 election will be conducted entirely by mail. Ballots to registered voters in the county are expected to be mailed at the end of August. Clark County has
lots and There are scores of good restaurants in Clark County, according to the response from readers last week in the Daily Insider survey of readers’ favorite restaurants. We didn’t exactly ask what restaurants there were to die for, but rather, if a reader has only one last meal in life, towhich restaurant would he or she go for that meal. The top three choices were close and the fourth not far behind. Insider readers adjudged The Restaurant at the Historic Reserve the first choice. A close second was Roots. Third place, just a little further back, was Beaches. Fourth place went to Tommy O’s. Fifth place winners were Thai Orchid and Jerusalem. Sixth place went to Bacchus, Grays at the Park, Hudson’s Bar and Grill, Tiger’s Garden. Seventh place winners were Burgerville USA, Cactus Ya Ya, Dulins, and McGrath’s Fish House. Other restaurants getting mentions were Applebees, Baja Fresh, Ballews, Bubba Too Scoops, Christine’s, Columbia River McMenamins, Farmer’s Market, Hong Kong Inn, Leonardo’s Pizza, Little Italy Trattoria, Los Dos Compadres, Olive Garden, Pacific Chowder House, Papa Pete’s Pizza, Paradise Café, Pizzacato, Stardust, Tai Pan, Thai Home Restaurant, and Tortillera y Tienda de Leon. The Insider restaurant list is not inclusive. There are many other great eating places in Clark County—Muchas Gracias Mexican Food, and Puffin, just to mention a couple. News brief Ninety-nine-cent fluorescent light bulbs are being made available at thousands of retail stores in the northwest, through a Bonneville Power Administration program in partnership with the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. Grover Electric and Plumbing Supply Co., 1900 NE 78th Street, is one of the outlets offering the five-year, 20-watt bulbs, said to give off the light of a 75-watt incandescent light bulb. BPA paid $1.25 for each of the 300,000 bulbs available, says Lisa Thompson, BPA program coordinator, for this one-time promotion of energy-efficient light bulbs.
