THURSDAY, Aug. 11, 2005 Fourth Plain Sub Area gets VHA kick start Transformation of the newly formed Fourth Plain Sub Area will get a $20 million boost in November if the tentative agreement between the Vancouver Housing Authority and Kyocera International Inc. gets final approval and expected financing. Under the agreement announced Wednesday by Kurt Creager, the housing authority’s executive director, VHA would acquire all but seven acres of the Kyocera Technology Park, 5713 E Fourth Plain Boulevard. Zoned for manufacturing, the 38.5-acre industrial park could be redeveloped for new industry employing up to 1,000 people, according to Creager. Kyocera International owns Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corporation, which will continue to occupy the remaining seven acres of the original industrial park. The housing authority was designated less than three months ago as a public development authority by the City of Vancouver and charged with revitalizing areas outside the downtown core and Vancouver Historic Reserve. “Our goals are to stimulate new investment, help create jobs, enhance public safety and improve the physical appearance of the Fourth Plain corridor,” Creager said. Port of
Ridgefield picnic The Port of Ridgefield’s second public picnic at the port’s boat launch area at the foot of Mill Street on Lake River in downtown Ridgefield will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. The first picnic last year was attended by over 400 people. The free event is described by port executive director Brent Grening as “just an old fashioned community get-together.” While hot dogs and picnic accoutrements will be offered, port officials will also show off community projects in which the port is involved. These are the proposed rail overpass nearby, the proposed new I-5 interchange with Pioneer Street in the port’s main industrial area, Discovery Point Corporate Park, and the environmental cleanup of the former PWT wood treating site. Parking is free. So is fishing off the day dock. The two boat launches will be open, but a fee of $6 will be charged. Special walking
history tours Hour-long walking history tours will be conducted in Vancouver Barracks during the three-day Americas Celebrate Freedom Salute commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II Friday, Aug. 26, through Sunday, Aug. 28. Tour groups for the approximately quarter-mile walk will be limited to a dozen persons each. Costumed guides will present the history of Ulysses S. Grant as a young lieutenant and post quartermaster and conclude with the events that took George C. Marshall from Vancouver to national prominence on the eve of World War II. The history tours were created by Vancouver’s Northwest Mystery Theater. General admission is $14, seniors, $12, and World War II veterans, $10. Reservations are recommended. For further information, call 607-2012, or (800) 820-6968. Processional to
follow The funeral for former Clark County Sheriff Frank Kanekoa, who died last week of diabetes issues, is Friday, Aug. 12, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 9728 NE 50th Avenue. Viewing will begin at 11 a.m., and the funeral service begins at 1 p.m. Following the service a processional will accompany Mr. Kanekoa’s body to the Camas Municipal Cemetery for burial. Mr. Kanekoa was sheriff of Clark County from 1978 to 1990. In lieu of flowers, the Kanekoa family has suggested donations to a memorial fund in Mr. Kanekoa’s name to support research into diabetes and heart disease prevention. People Melanie Green, youth coordinator for Clark County’s Youth Options Program, is one of four persons selected nationally to participate in a planning summit for teenagers and young adults to help develop Hawaii’s Young Adult Support Organization Plan. Green, who has overcome personal struggles with depression and self-injury, has been recruited nationally for speaking opportunities. The Youth Options Program, part of Clark County’s Department of Community Services, assists local youngsters who have mental health issues to make a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood.
