The mayors of Clark County’s municipalities will meet with Clark County commissioners at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in suite 103 of the Fire District 5 training facility, 11606 NE 66th Street, to discuss the size and location of proposed urban growth areas. The unusual work session, open to the public, will give each of the county municipalities an opportunity to describe its preferences for the size of growth it expects over the next 20 years. Clark County’s three commissioners are working toward developing a new Comprehensive Growth Management Plan to replace one adopted at the end of 2004. The new plan is expected to offer a more aggressive growth scenario than that adopted last year. The 2004 plan was attacked by environmentalists as being too aggressive, and developers for being too shortsighted. The developers dropped appeals after the commissioners decided to open up the growth management plan. Then this week a state hearings board upheld the commissioners and rejected appeals by environmentalists. County commissioners will follow the August meeting with a work session at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the Public Service Center, to decide how much additional population and employment should be allocated to each of the county’s cities. Those allocations will help determine the amount of land to be included in each city’s urban growth area. Cities then will be asked to set priorities for the specific areas that would accommodate the added capacity for homes and businesses over the next 20 years. The process of writing the new Comprehensive Growth Management plan is expected to continue well into 2006. Calendar Jazz and patriotism are expected to draw tens of thousands to downtown Vancouver and the Historic Reserve Trust this weekend. n Dirty dogs done dirt cheap is the theme of a fundraising dog wash sponsored by the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Corbin Cleaners, 1520 B Street, Washougal. Fee for washing any size dog is $10. and includes a discount coupon for a pet identification microchip.
