THURSDAY, SEPT. 22, 2005 Kathryn Scott to head Leadership Clark County
Kathryn Scott, a former small business owner and mediator, has been named executive director of Leadership Clark County. Scott was a founder of the Camas Educational Foundation. She previously was a law clerk for the division chief of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Scott is a graduate of Stanford University and earned a law degree from the University of California, Davis. Leadership Clark County, in its 13th year, provides a comprehensive 10-month leadership training program for emerging leaders in southwest Washington. Free events and

movie, One hundred years ago a balloonist landed on what is now known as Pearson Field, one of the world's oldest operating airports. That event and the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the airfield that has served army, federal and civilian aircraft, will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 24, with rededication activities from noon to 3 p.m. at the Chkalov Monument on the field at 1115 E 5th Street. Although there is no charge for rededication activities or for a showing of the 1945 John Wayne classic, The High and the Mighty, there is an admission charge for the Pearson Air Museum. The free movie is at 7 p.m. in the air museum. The air field was named for Lt. Alexander Pearson Jr., who frequently flew from the airfield. He died in a pre-race airplane crash in 1924. Cami Joner, communications coordinator for the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust, says the dedication of the airfield 75 years ago was a very big event for the city. The dedication included an air show and "flying circus." In all 52 aircraft participated. Vancouver aviation historian Bill Alley reports that the dedication activities drew so many people that Vancouver officials had to rent parking space in Portland for visitors. Dinner and dance to benefit Hospice House A dinner, dance and auction to benefit the Ray Hickey Hospice House begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 in the Hilton Vancouver Washington. Master of ceremonies is KATU, Channel 2 anchor Steve Dunn. Dinner music is by design. Major sponsors for the $100 per person, black-tie optional, gala are The Columbian, First Independent Bank and Southwest Washington Medical Center. Council for Homeless recognition luncheon Friday Julie DeSmith, executive director of Clark County's YW Housing, is the keynote speaker at the 6th annual Council for the Homeless recognition luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in the Hilton Vancouver Washington. Being honored at the $35 luncheon are community partners, St. Paul and St. Andrew Lutheran Churches, community volunteer, Charles Buckley, community supporters, Robert and Debra Durgan, quiet hero, Gary Schneider, and council volunteer-of-the-year, Janet Charles. For further information, call 993-9571. People Sally Schaefer and Charles Carter, both of the class of 1955, have been named distinguished alumni of Willamette University. They were cited for their outstanding community service. Awards will be presented at a Saturday, Sept. 24, dinner in the university conference center. News briefs A house named Highlander, built by Clark & Son Homes, was judged best-in-show in the recent Parade of Homes by the Building Industry Association of Clark County, sponsors of the event. Those who attended the show voted a house called The Giving House, built by Fazzolari Custom Homes, as best-in-show. All nine homes in the Parade of Homes at Riverview Terrace, Washougal, were sold by the end of the 18-day show. Calendar The Clark County Planning
