Free events and including a John Wayne movie,
celebrate 100-year-old Pearson Field Saturday

One hundred years ago a balloonist landed on what is now known as Pearson Field, one of the world's oldest operating airports. That event and the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the airfield that has served army, federal and civilian aircraft, will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 24, with rededication activities from noon to 3 p.m. at the Chkalov Monument on the field at 1115 E 5th Street.

Although there is no charge for rededication activities or for a showing of the 1945 John Wayne classic, The High and the Mighty, there is an admission charge for the Pearson Air Museum. The free movie is at 7 p.m. in the air museum.

The air field was named for Lt. Alexander Pearson Jr., who frequently flew from the airfield. He died in a pre-race airplane crash in 1924.

Cami Joner, communications coordinator for the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust, says the dedication of the airfield 75 years ago was a very big event for the city. The dedication included an air show and "flying circus." In all 52 aircraft participated.

Vancouver aviation historian Bill Alley reports that the dedication activities drew so many people that Vancouver officials had to rent parking space in Portland for visitors.
