MONDAY, SEPT. 26, 2005 Local petitions to get out of
Iraq Signed petitions demanding an end to “U.S. control over Iraq and turning over political responsibility for transition to the U.N” were taken to the offices of Democratic U.S. Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, and U.S. Rep. Brian Baird, by members of Vancouver for Peace, reports spokesperson Robert Fizzell. Petitions were collected during the Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair in Esther Short Park, and at the Vancouver Farmers Market Saturday. Several hundred attended the Peace and Justice Fair.
Early learning forum prompted Promoting early learning, State Rep. Deb Wallace (D-17th) has scheduled an Early Learning forum for 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, in the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center. Panelists for the free forum are Doreen Turpin, Fort Vancouver Regional Library District, Laurie Cornelius, Clark College, Patricia Nierenberg, Clark County Early Learning Fund, and Melinda Jennings, Evergreen Public Schools. According to Wallace, 90 percent of brain growth occurs before kindergarten; children who do not know their numbers before kindergarten are likely to be poor at math the rest of their lives; more than half the children entering kindergarten are unprepared for school.
Clark forum to zero in on Panelists from the Vancouver-Portland area news media will discuss the responsibility of the news media in a democratic society at a public forum sponsored by the Young Democrats Club at Clark College at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in Foster Hall at the college’s McLoughlin Boulevard, Fort Vancouver Way campus. The forum, third in a series called “Truth of Propaganda?” will be moderated by April Baer, Oregon Public Broadcasting’s morning host for NPR Morning Edition. Panelists are Dave Kearn, assistant metro editor, The Columbian, Michael Arrieta, public editor, the Oregonian, Erick Anderson, publisher and editor, Vanguard, and Lisa Loving, KBOO Community Radio. Editor needs Friday the Insider referred to Robert Djergaian, newly appointed to the Southwest Washington Medical Center Foundation board of directors, as a psychiatrist. The medical community has been particularly forthcoming in correcting us. The term physiatrist refers to the specialty of Physical Medicine. Practitioners of this field generally deal with rehabilitation, from injuries such as fractures, strokes, etc. Dr. Djergaian is the head of the rehab unit (inpatient unit) at SWMC, Richard Dobrow, a valued critic of these pages, reported. Larry Cohen, director, planning, Southwest Washington Medical Center, corroborated this information. People Jane McCullough-Halcomb participated in the dedication of a 562-foot mural in Vista, Calif., last week. The mural took two and a half years to complete. One segment features the four Vista High School cheerleaders of 1953, including Holcomb. n Patrick White has been reappointed to the Clark County Board of Equalization. n Sondra Dudley has been reappointed to the Clark County Community Action Advisory Board. Calendar Following a 4-to-6 p.m. tour of
the Burnt Bridge Creek Greenway Restoration Project, the Vancouver City
Council will convene at City Hall to consider a short consent agenda.

Clark Public Utilities’ commissioners, meeting in regular session at 9
a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, are expected to adopt ordinances increasing
industrial and commercial electric rates, effective October 1. An
increase in residential electric rates, expected to be offset by
Bonneville Power Administration residential exchange rebates, is also
under consideration.

Clark County commissioners meeting in regular session at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 27, are expected to approve memoranda of agreement among
the county, the Columbia Basin Railroad and the Battle Ground, Yacolt
and Chelatchie Prairie Railroad Association, that paving the way for
renewed operation of the BYCY excursion trains in Northern Clark County,
perhaps in time for the Christmas Season.

Clark County commissioners are holding a work session on proposed growth
management plan changes as they relate to expanded urban growth areas,
at a special work session at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.
