Real manager of Hotel Rwanda
to address YWCA October benefit

Paul Rusesabagina, who managed the Mille Collines Hotel in Rwanda during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, for which he was credited with saving 1,200 members of both rival Hutu and Tutsi tribes, while 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu tribal members dying at the hands of Hutu extremists, is the featured speaker at the YWCA of Clark County benefit luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in the Hilton Vancouver Washington.

Rusesabagina’s deeds were portrayed in the 2004 film, Hotel Rwanda.

Tickets are $35, for what YWCA spokesperson Kathy Deschner says is expected to be a sell-out crowd of 1,000. For reservations, call Annie Gannon, 906-9153.

Gaylynn Brien is Ridgefield’s new
Finance and Administration director

Gaylynn Brien, formerly Clark County Health Department finance manager, has been appointed director of Finance and Administration for the City of Ridgefield, reports Ridgefield city manager George Fox. Brien succeeds Tara Erickson, controller, who has moved to a career in the private sector.

Brien, who also has worked for the City of Portland, holds a masters degree in business administration from Washington State University and is a Certified Management Accountant.

According to Fox, Brien will manage and direct the city’s general accounting system and will assist the city manager in preparing and administering the city budget.

Clark Public Utilities to deal with
residential water well contamination

Utilizing a federal grant and a state loan, Clark Public Utilities will develop measures to help improve the quality of the water supply of residents east of Woodland in the Hayes Road area, according to utility commissioner Bryan Hanke.

A federal grant of $500,000, secured by U.S. Rep. Patty Murray, will provide just over half the financing needed. The rest will come from a loan from the state drinking water revolving fund. The loan will be repaid by residents in the affected area.

The residential wells are tainted by arsenic levels 50 times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency’s drinking water standard.

According to Hanke, the residents affected are too far from the utility’s water system to be hooked up. The solution, according to Hanke is developing a satellite water system. Without the federal funding it would have been too costly to set up, he said.
