Saturday A special program, “First People of the River,” recognizing pre-Lewis and Clark native American culture in the northwest begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, in the Water Resources Education Center. The four-hour program of music, film and demonstrations is being presented in conjunction with the month-long exhibit “Discovering the Rivers of Lewis and Clark. Presenters are Harvest Moon, Quinault tribal member, Isaac Trimble, flutist and flute maker, the Northwest Indian Veterans Association and the Columbia Basin Basketry Guild. Admission is free. County commissioners holding
special Clark County commissioners have called a special work session for 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, to discuss the extent of losses in revenue for county and state road projects should Initiative 912 be approved, negating new gasoline-tax financed projects. If the measure is approved by voters, most of the major planned improvements on I-5 and I-205 in the county would be set back. In addition, the funding promised for a $50 million study of a new Columbia River Crossing at the present location of the Interstate Bridge would be eliminated. The initiative seeks to overturn the 9.5 cents per gallon gasoline tax that would have been phased in over the next several years. People Eric Pennala has joined the City of Ridgefield as community development manager, reports city manager George Fox. Pennala will be responsible for all phases of the city’s growth management, zoning administration, permitting and land use development management. He previously was a planner with the cities of Maple Valley and Grants Pass. Win a pair of general

helmet and car seat safety information will be offered. Bicycle helmets
will be fitted and sold. Beaches Restaurant will serve barbecued hot

Survey geologist, will present a program on Mount St. Helen’s past year
dome building at the Johnson Ridge Observatory at 1:30 p.m. Saturday,
Oct. 1, according to The Columbian.
Admission is $3 for adults. Those 15 years old or younger are admitted

A free public forum, “Responsibility of the News Media in a Democratic
Society.” is being presented at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in Foster Hall at
Clark College. The forum is sponsored by Clark’s Young Democrats Club.
