Peter Fels to chair Peter Fels, Vancouver attorney, has been elected chair of Partners in Careers, a private nonprofit agency serving Clark County job seekers and employers. P.I.C. has provided job training and employment services from 111 W. 39th Street for the past 25 years. Nancy Baker, Port of Vancouver commissioner, was reelected vice chair. Richard High, vice president of Riverview Community Bank, was elected secretary.
Brian Baird bringing salmon U.S. Rep. Brian Baird (D-3rd) is bringing the first of a series of northwest salmon survival meetings to Vancouver at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 Columbia Way. The Congressional meetings will focus on the survival of returning adult salmon and steelhead and will bring together various stakeholders and interested parties from both the public and private sectors. Witnesses at the Congressional meetings are by invitation only, although written testimony may be submitted and the public is invited to attend. The meetings are being conducted by Baird and Washington U.S Rep. Norm Dicks (D-6th) and Oregon U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-2nd).
Public being offered lunch tour Parents, patrons, business people and the public are being invited to a lunch tour of the Clark County Skills Center. It begins at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the center’s campus, 12200 NE 28th Street. A “gourmet” lunch will be offered for $4 by the center’s award-winning Restaurant Management/Culinary Arts Department. Opened in 1983, the Skills Center is owned and operated by ten southwest Washington school districts. Library offering free classes on The Fort Vancouver Regional Library District’s new catalog system is as user-friendly as Google or Powells.com, according to local librarians. Nevertheless the district is offering free classes during October and November to help patrons get the most out of the look and feel of the electronic catalog system. The new system provides one-stop shopping for patrons to place holds on books, review selection content and request books not in the regional library current collection. The first class is 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the Vancouver Community Library. Class size is limited to six persons, and pre-registration is required. For further information, call 696-1566. News briefs Education Service District 112, which provides local and regional cooperative programs and services to school districts in six southwest Washington counties, has been designated winner of a prestigious National Rural Education Association award for promoting equitable educational opportunities for rural school children. ESD 112 was nominated for the award by the Stevenson-Carlson and White Salmon Valley School Districts. It is the first time a west coast educational service district has ever won the award. n Clark County sheriff Garry Lucas reports: “If you are looking for more than just a job, if you’re looking for a challenging career that allows the personal satisfaction that your are making a contribution to the community, apply for a position as a deputy sheriff.
