Cliff and Patricia Barbour celebrating
retirement Wednesday in Gaiser Hall

Photographers Cliff and Patricia Barbour who have photographed nearly every major event in Clark County over the past 22 years as owners of Barbour’s Photography, 1912 C Street, are the subject of other photographers from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in Gaiser Hall, as friends and associates help them celebrate “semi-retirement.”

It’s “semi-retirement,” according to Cliff Barbour, because the couple, who have been married 38 years, will spend their retirement between Vancouver and Mexico, with other international travel added for travel-related camera assignments.

Their studio will be taken over by son Scott, a Washington State University and Clark College graduate. Cliff opened the business following his graduation from Clark College in 1983. Cliff is a member of the Clark College Alumni Association board of directors.

Everyone is invited, Cliff says. “It’s our way of saying thank you to all the people who have helped us along the way.

Columbia River Task Force to
discuss scope in public meeting

The Columbia River Task Force will discuss a summary of transportation problems on the 1-5 Interstate Bridge corridor it will address and the evaluation criteria it will establish to measure the effectiveness of proposed project alternatives, in a public meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the state Department of Transportation southwest region headquarters, 11018 NE 51st Circle.

Over the next two to three years the task force will consider a variety of issues, including congestion, freight movement, high capacity transit, environmental issues and funding for a new or improved river crossing between Vancouver and Portland.

The 38-member task force, which includes leaders from Washington and Oregon’s community, business, civic, neighborhood, freight, commuter and environmental agencies and groups, is co-chaired by Hal Dengerink, chancellor of Washington State University Vancouver, and Henry Hewlett, Portland.

Clark College music professor
gets national ASCAP award

Donald Appert has been presented with an ASCAPLUS award by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, for his musical composition Elegy for String Orchestra, which has been performed in France, Romania, Portugal and Slovakia, and Vancouver.

The award is in the form of a “royalty” paid for performances to audiences outside the United States. ASCAP, with over 185,000 composer, lyricist and music publisher members, is the largest performing rights organization in the world.

Appert has twice conducted the Slovak State Orchestra in Kosice, Slovakia, most recently on September 12 for a concert sponsored by the American Embassy there as a memorial to the events of 9/11. Appert’s wife, Linda Appert, a coloratura soprano, who is also a music professor at Clark, was featured soloist in the 9/11 program.

Appert  is in his 16th season as music director/conductor of the Clark College Orchestra.
