WinterFaire opens Friday in
Water Resources Education Center

More than two dozen fine artists and craftspersons will have their wares available for sale at the Vancouver WinterFaire this weekend in the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way.

The event opens with a reception for the artists from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served, and wine tastes will be available for purchase.

WinterFaire continues 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. For further information, call 696-8478.

Bravo! Vancouver kicks off season
with traditional Handel’s Messiah

Bravo! Vancouver begins its 12th season with its annual traditional presentation of Handel’s Messiah at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 400 S Andresen Road.

Bravo! Vancouver’s season of eclectic presentations includes swinging chamber music in January, opera that rocks in February, St. Paul, an Oratorio, in April, which features the Washington State Ballet, an afternoon of Mozart by the Bravo! Chamber Orchestra in May, and concludes June with jazz music featuring the Pacific Jazz Orchestra. Except for the jazz concert which is scheduled for Saturday night, all concerts are presented on Sunday afternoons.

Season tickets for all six concerts are $80. Single reserved tickets,  which are $15, may be ordered through Bravo! Box Office, 906-04541 or www.bravoconcerts.com. Single tickets are also available at TicketsWest or at the door.

The concert series is produced and conducted by Michael Kissinger and Maria Manzo.

Santa Claus making guest appearances
and taking lists at Westfield Vancouver Mall

Santa Claus is currently appearing at the Westfield Vancouver Mall, where he is available for pictures with believers and will be hearing their requests for Christmas gifts.

Appearances are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays, through Saturday, Dec. 24. For further information, call 892-6255.

Joint legislative hearing to look
into emergency preparedness

A joint legislative hearing on emergency preparedness will take testimony from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in the Northwest Regional Training Center’s Rainier Auditorium, 11606 NE 66th Circle.

Members of the House State Government Operations and Accountability and the House Local Government Committee, as well as members of the Senate Government Operations and Elections Committee, will participate.

Local presenters are Dave Sauerbrey, fire marshal, Fire District 5, Marty James, district administrator, Northwest Regional Training Center, Scott Clemens, Southwest Washington Chapter of the American Red Cross, Tom McDowell chairman, Washington State Fire Defense Committee and chief of Clark County Fire District 5, and John Wheeler, Clark Regional Emergency Services.

People

Jim Tangeman this week was presented the Daybreak Youth Services Advisory Board President’s Award for distinguished and exceptional service in 2005. Tangeman, who has been a member of the board since it was organized three years ago, is also a facilitator for mentoring services at Columbia River Mental Health Services. Daybreak is a treatment program for adolescents who have been damaged by drug and alcohol abuse. n John Hart has joined the Southwest Washington Medical Center’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department and will practice in the department’s new Salmon Creek satellite office, 14508 NE 20th Avenue. The new clinic manages patients with physical disabilities from neurologic and orthopedic conditions and patients with acute and chronic pain.

The one-day Santa’s Workshop Holiday Bazaar is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Marshall Community Center, Saturday, Nov. 19. There is no admission charge. n The deadline for nominations for American Red Cross Real Hero Awards is Friday, Dec. 2, reports Nancy Retsinas, spokesperson for the local Red Cross program.
