Library board asking for public
comment on failed bond issue

The board of trustees of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District has scheduled a December public hearing to accept information from the public regarding the district’s two “heartbreaking” losses at the polls for a bond issue that would have remodeled and expanded the library system in the City of Vancouver.

The most recent loss was in November, when a measure within the city was approved by a whopping 59.4 percent majority, but not whopping enough. The law regarding voter approval of bond issues financed by property taxes requires a 60 percent majority.

Over 60 percent of the voters approved creation of a library district in Vancouver, and the same voters approved the bond issue that would have paid for expansion of the Vancouver Community and Cascade Park Libraries by 19,287 to 13,197 votes—59.37 percent. As library trustee Jerry King puts it, “it was a heartbreaking loss. It really was, wasn’t it, to come to close to 60 percent, so very close, to 59.37 percent and yet not to be a winner?”

The trustees meeting is at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, in Library Hall in the Vancouver Community Library, 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard.

The question before the board is: “In light of two failed bond measures, what action should the library board take to solve the problem of insufficient facilities in Vancouver?”

News briefs

Wells Fargo has donated $300,000 to permanently endow a college scholarship fund that will help up to four qualifying Native American students fill unmet financial aid each year. Available to qualified Native American college juniors, the scholarships will be administered through the American Indian Graduate center. Students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average, and major in business, finance or gaming and hospitality. Wells Fargo has lent more than $1.8 billion to tribes and Native Americans and is one of the primary providers of financial services and a leading lender to the tribal gaming industry. Further information is available by going to www.aigc.com. n The Insider yesterday erroneously reported that Ted Davis, Jim Fenstermacher and Tim Probst had been appointed to the Clark County Skills Center board of directors. They were, in fact, appointed to the Skills Center Foundation board of directors.
