MONDAY, Dec. 12, 2005 Nierenbergs going begging
David and Patricia Nierenberg have increased their gift to Southwest Washington Medical Center to $15 million. Shown in the foreground is David’s mother, Lynne, for whom Nierenberg’s earlier gift for SWMC intensive care nursery suite is named David and Patricia Nierenberg are matching an earlier $15 million Ed and Mary Firstenburg pledge to Southwest Washington Medical Center by upping their previous pledges to $15 million and earmarking them primarily for women’s and children’s services. Further, David, who made the announcement during a Sunday evening fund raising party at Bob and Sally Schaefer’s home, announced they are leading a “begging tour,” similar to the begging tours undertaken by Mother Joseph two centuries ago, to help sustain the first hospital in the northwest, St. Joseph Hospital, which she founded in Vancouver in 1858. The Nierenberg pledge includes a $1 million endowment fund for child care scholarships at the Patricia Nierenberg Child Care and Early Learning Center and a $2.5 million donation to build SWMC's new Holtzman Twins Special Care Nursery, a facility for fragile and premature babies, which is named for David's mother and godmother. Most of Nierenberg's $15 million gift will be earmarked for challenge grants benefiting the medical center’s Women’s and Children’s Center of Excellence. The Nierenberg and Firstenburg gifts are cornerstones of a $50 million medical center “begging tour” capital campaign ramping up early next year. The medical center is in the midst of a nearly $200 million expansion on its Mill Plain campus, which is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Said Nierenberg: “Southwest Washington Medical Center is governed by a volunteer board of directors consisting entirely of people, like me, who live in the community and doctors who practice medicine at the hospital. The hospital is owned by all the people of this community. Its only mission is to serve the health needs of all who live here. Patricia and I believe that SWMC is a true jewel of our community. In making this gift, and in leading this capital campaign for SWMC, we believe we are helping to maintain the tradition of caring for our neighbors which was established by the medical center’s founder, Mother Joseph, 147 years ago. “We ask everyone here tonight, as well as our neighbors who aren’t here tonight, to find the right way for them to join us in this ‘begging tour.’” The Nierenbergs came to Vancouver from New Jersey nine years ago. Since then, Patricia has become a member of the boards of the Humane Society, Foundation for Early Learning, and Southwest Washington Medical Center Foundation, and is a volunteer in the Evergreen Schools. David is a founder and former president of Evergreen School District Foundation and has served on the board of directors of the Confluence Project. He is vice chairman of the medical center’s board of directors and a member of the Community Foundation board of directors. An investor, David is a member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors and the Washington State Investment Board. MarCine Miles announces county clerk candidacy
