Death claims Eleanor Van de Water, founder
of the Fort Vancouver Tapestry project

Eleanor Van de Water is shown
when she participated in the
recent opening of the Fort
Vancouver Tapestry Project at
Clark College

Death last night claimed Eleanor Van de Water, co-founder, with Sherry Mowatt, of the Fort Vancouver Tapestry project. Mrs. Van de Water was 74. No further details were available this afternoon.

The tapestry project depicts, in 20 miles of yarn sewn into 108 feet of historic panels, the history of Clark County from the time before the Lewis and Clark expedition through 2005. It is believed to be the largest historical tapestry ever created in the United States.

Currently the project is on display at Clark College. It goes to the state capitol in Olympia in 2007.

Mrs. Van de Water lived to see its completion, although she was already blind in one eye and had nearly lost sight in the other.

Mrs. Van de Water was already an accomplished, nationally known professional fiber artist in 1999 when she and Mowatt turned a $9,000 grant from the City of Vancouver into an over half-million-dollar art-history project. An estimated 96,000 hours went into the project and involved more than 57 volunteers, who worked with the founders.
