Library board to ask public
whether to censor Internet

In a news release issued this week, the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District board of trustees announced they want responses to the following question:

“The library’s current Internet access policy requires mandatory filtering of sexually-explicit websites, with adults 17 and older being able to turn off the filter. Should the district change its policy to eliminate the ability of adults to turn off the filter?”

Comments are to be submitted by Saturday, Dec. 31, and will be reviewed at a trustees meeting at a 4-to-6 p.m. workshop session, Monday, Jan. 9, in the Washougal Community Library, 1661 C Street. Public comment will not be taken during the workshop, nor will the trustees make any decisions at that time.

Comments may be submitted by mail to FVRL, 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard, Vancouver, WA 98663, by email at trustees@fvrl.org. or online to a comment form at www.fvrl.org. For further information, call 695-1561.

Baine Wilson to run for
Clark County Clerk office

Baine Wilson has announced she is a Republican candidate for office of Clark County Clerk. Wilson currently works in the county clerk’s office as a program coordinator for the Clark County Superior Court Collection Unit.

Also in the race for the county post is Democrat MarCine Miles, a Vancouver attorney.

Prior to working for the county, Wilson was a probation/parole officer for the state Department of Corrections for 14 years.

A La Center resident, Wilson is a Clark County native and a graduate of La Center High School. She earned a bachelors degree from the University of Portland.

Vancouver Community Concert
Band seeking new members

The Vancouver Community Concert Band, now in its second year, is seeking additional members, reports band director Jim Rourk.

Being part of the band is easy, Rourk says. “There are no auditions and no membership fees. All a prospective member needs is a musical instrument and a desire to play. We even have free new beginners classes,” Rourk adds.

The band plays marches, folk tunes, musical tunes, and jazz and classical adaptations. All band concerts are free, although donations are accepted.

To join the band or request the band to play for a public function, call Rourk at 735-7806.

People

Don Lawry, after 36 years and one month with the City of Vancouver, has retired. He was Operations Center superintendent, overseeing water distribution, wastewater collection and surface water maintenance for the city. He was honored with a retirement party by current and former colleagues Tuesday.

News briefs

No need to be a shut-in on New Year’s Eve, according to J.J. Wills, spokesperson for the Hilton Vancouver Washington. The hotel is offering a $199-plus-tax package on Saturday, Dec. 31: a standard room for two, plus a five-course dinner, followed by a champagne toast at midnight, for two in the hotel’s restaurant, Gray’s at the Park. Without the package, the prix fixe dinner is $50 per person and a flight of paired wines is an additional $50 per person. For additional information, call 993-4500. n Vancouver firefighters need more coats. Recent cold weather has exhausted the supply of over 300 winter coats donated to the Vancouver Fire Department firefighters at Station 86 at 400 E. 37th Street. Firefighters distribute the coats to coatless individuals they encounter while out on emergency calls. Clean, usable coats, can be dropped off at the station, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday through December 31.

Calendar

A Clark County Health Department free forum to explain the new state non-smoking laws to businesses is at 7 p.m. this evening in the Fort Vancouver Regional Library, 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard.
