Koplan and Raines presented
foundation awards for excellence

Keith Koplan, owner of Koplan Furniture, and Jim Raines, former Vancouver School District speech therapist, have been presented Clark College Foundation Presidential Awards for Excellence for their “significant contributions to Clark College in support of the college’s mission.”

The awards were presented by Clark College president Bob Knight and Clark College Foundation president Lisa Gibert. Gibert said, “Jim Raines and Keith Koplan are outstanding community leaders, whose generosity and support have helped the foundation carry out its mission.”

Koplan, a longtime member of the foundation board of directors, serves on the foundation’s investment committee. Raines is a member of the Clark College Alumni Association board and is alumni membership chairman. He is also on the board of directors of the college’s Penguin Athletic Club.

Parks Foundation to honor retiring
executive director Phyllis Goldhammer

The Parks Foundation will pay tribute to retiring executive director Phyllis Goldhammer at its annual meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, in the Firstenburg Community Center.

Goldhammer is being honored for the “thousands and thousands” of hours she has devoted to the establishment, organization and growth of the foundation.

Admission to the annual meeting and barbecue dinner is $15 per person. For further information, call Cheri Martin, 693-7070.

Filing for elective offices
begins at 8 a.m. Monday

The filing period for candidacy for elective offices begins at 8 a.m. Monday, June 4, and concludes at 5 p.m. Friday, June 8, reports Clark County auditor Greg Kimsey. Candidates will file for district and city offices in the Elections Department, 1408 Franklin Street.

Filing this year is seven weeks earlier than in previous years, according to Kimsey.

The primary election will be held August 21, a month earlier than in the past. The general election will be in November. Three positions, currently held by Dan Tonkovich, Tim Leavitt and Larry J. Smith, are open on the Vancouver City Council. Three council positions are open on the Battle Ground City Council, including that of mayor John Idsigna. Four council positions the mayor position are open in Camas. In La Center two council positions are open as well the office of mayor. Five council positions are open on the Ridgefield City Council. Six positions are open on the Washougal City Council. The office of mayor and four council positions are open in Woodland and the mayor’s office and three council positions are open in the Town of Yacolt.

Three or more positions in each of the Clark County school districts are up for grabs, except for the Mt. Pleasant School District, where two positions are open. One position is up for election in each of the county’s fire districts, and one commissioner is up for election in each of the county port districts, Camas-Washougal, Ridgefield and Vancouver.

Vancouver historical walking
tours begin Saturday

Twice-weekly walking tours of downtown Vancouver areas, sponsored by the Clark County Historical Society, begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2, from the Historical Museum, 1511 Main Street.

Saturday tours are $10 per person and last from one-and-a-half to two hours. Shorter tours, from 12:10 to

12:50 p.m. scheduled on Tuesdays, beginning June 7, are $5 each.

Reservations are recommended and may be had by calling museum executive director Susan Tissot, 993-5679.
