Richard Melching named Community
foundation interim president

Richard Melching, retired superintendent of Evergreen Public Schools, was unanimously elected interim president of the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington, the foundation’s board chair, Sue Keil, reports.

Melching will serve as interim president while the board searches for a permanent president to succeed Nancy Hales, who resigned last month to open a private consulting practice.

Melching, a long-time resident of Clark County, retired from the Evergreen School District in 2005. He works as a consultant in the areas of executive coaching, board development, strategic planning and project management.

Melching is a member of the Clark County Early Learning Foundation, the Evergreen School District Foundation and the Community Foundation. Melching is also a member of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and the Vancouver Police Chief’s Advisory Committee. He is a past chair of the Coalition for East Vancouver Communities and is a past member of the board of directors of the Columbia River Economic Development Council.

Target date for mailing August 21 primary ballots to Clark County voters is Wednesday, Aug. 1, reports county elections supervisor Tim Likness. This election, as all county elections, is being conducted entirely by mail.

Voters may register by mail until Saturday, July 21. Registration in person at the county elections office, 1408 Franklin Street, will continue through Monday, Aug. 6.

The primary election includes ballot measures for levy increases by the Port of Vancouver and Fire District 12, as well as contests among a number of city council and school board positions throughout the county.

Bank of Clark County named one of Best
Companies to Work for, 5th year in a row

The Bank of Clark County has been recognized as one of the Best Companies to Work for in Washington State by Washington CEO Magazine for the fifth consecutive year, reports bank CEO Mike Worthy.

The bank also won the award in 1999, the year it was founded.

Bank of Clark County vice president and human resources manager Diana Hilsenteger accepted the award on behalf of the bank last week.

Be careful, it’s hot and dangerous out there

Watch for symptoms that include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headache, pale, clammy skin, rapid week pulse and intense thirst. These are signs of heat exhaustion, which can lead to heatstroke, reports Southwest Washington Medical Center’s director of emergency services Marty Bell.

The onset of extremely hot weather this week is expected to cause an increase in the number of heat-related difficulties, especially among the very old and very young.

Except for mild symptoms, call a doctor for advice and arrange for transportation to the hospital, Bell says. For further information, go to www.swmedicalcenter.org/heat.

Meanwhile, Salem police report a rash of women’s purse thefts from shopping carts. Purses can be stolen in seconds from carts, police say. They advise women to hold on to their purses while shopping.
