Statesman Al Bauer
will discuss book
Former state senator Al Bauer, whose political career spanned 30 years in Olympia, will discuss his recently published book From Fairview to Salmon Creek: A Community Spirit, on general election night, Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the Penguin Student Lounge in the Penguin Student Union on the Clark College campus. Bauer’s 7 p.m. presentation precedes election results, which are expected to be posted at 8:30 p.m. in the student union building. Bauer will also take questions and sign copies of his book. Net proceeds from the book will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Washington and the Clark College Foundation. The just-published book focuses on how compassion towards community can lead to greater things. Clark College president Bob Knight said, “On a day when we’re electing leaders and deciding issues that are vital to our future, it is a privilege to welcome Al Bauer, a statesman who has given so much to our college, our community and our state.” Bauer Hall, on the Clark College campus, was named for the former senator, who also taught school in Clark County for 20 years. In 2000, then Gov. Gary Locke named Bauer “the Education Senator from Washington State. Bauer has also been honored as an Outstanding Clark College Alumnus, and in 2001 he received the First Citizen Award from the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington. Community Pride winners named Six projects will earn Community Pride Design Awards next Thursday, Oct. 25, during the 12th annual presentation of awards for buildings, developments and designs that have a positive impact on the community. The awards are sponsored though the Clark County Community Development in partnership with other public and private organizations. The 2007 winners for projects that show an innovative design and contribute to community and environmental enhancement are as follows: Battle Ground Skate Park, Main Street and Fairgrounds Avenue, Battle Ground; Center for Community Health, 1601 E Fourth Plain Boulevard; Firstenburg Tower, Southwest Washington Medical Center, 400 NE Mother Joseph Place; Kiwanis Park, 422 SW 2nd Avenue, Battle Ground; Union Ridge High School, 6204 Friberg-Strunk Street, Camas; and the Woods residence, 2400 H Street. The awards ceremony is at 2:30 p.m. in the hearing room in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street. Vancouver City Council hits the road The Vancouver City Council will meet in workshop session at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in the Community Room in the Firstenburg Community Center, 700 NE 136th Avenue. The council will also convene its consent agenda session at 6 p.m. in the same location. Mayor Royce Pollard said the meeting was being held in east Vancouver because, “we want to make sure we make our meetings as open and as convenient to as many people as possible.” Vancouver City Council meetings are also televised live on CVTV, channel 23. News briefs Clark College has welcomed 12 new tenure-track faculty members. Achieving tenure at Clark College is a three-year process during which new faculty are mentored by their instructional dean, three faculty members and a student.
