Val Joshua Racial Justice Awards were presented to Jamie McCoy and Richard Twiss in ceremonies yesterday in the YWCA Clark County. In addition, Soar International was given the first YWCA Youth Social Justice Award.

McCoy is the pre-school director of Learning Avenues Child Care Center. She is also president of the Vancouver Heights Methodist Church Council.

Twiss is the president and founder of Wiconi International, an organization that works to help Native Americans become leaders in the Christian Church.

Soar International helps eradicate landmines in Vietnam, helps students in Rwanda and  helps provide school supplies to homeless children in the Vancouver-Portland area.

County seeking applications for
Three Creeks Planning Council

Applications and nominations for appointments to the new Three Creeks Advisory Council are being sought by the board of Clark County commissioners.

The council will assist with transportation, land-use planning and related issues for the Three Creeks Special Planning Area, which includes unincorporated urban areas around Hazel Dell, Felida Lake Shore, Salmon Creek and the county fairgrounds.

Letters of interest along with resumes should be sent to Troy.Rayburn@clark.wa.gov.

Lasher announces tax foreclosure auction

Two residential pieces of property are expected to be offered at a property tax foreclosure auction at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in the commissioner’s hearing room in the Public Service Center, reports county treasurer Doug Lahser.

A list of foreclosure property is available at www.clark.wa.gov/treasurer/salesinfo.html. Cash, a cashier’s check or money order is required at time of sale, Lasher says.

New members of SWWDC
board are named

The Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council has added eight new members on its board of directors, according to Lisa Nisenfeld, executive director.

The new members are as follows: Linda Beck, president, New Edge Networks; Karen Diller, assistant vice chancellor of academic affairs, Washington State University Vancouver; Phil Dines, busines agent, Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 26; Debbie Iverson, plant manager, Tensolite; Kathy Kneip, executive director, YWCA Clark County; Loren Lee, Longview Fibre; Dan Story, Vancouver Community Services office, state department of social and health services; and Lydia Work, CEO, American Paper Converting.

SWWDC provides worker training in Clark, Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties.

First Friday Art Walk tours will depart
every 20 minutes from Keller Williams

First Friday Art Walk tours will depart from the Keller Williams real estate office, 915 Broadway, every 20 minutes from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1.

Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served. The free event is hosted by Keller Williams and the Clark County Mural Society.

A reception for retiring Vancouver City Council member Dan Tonkovich is 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in the Marshall House, 1301 Officers Row. Tonkovich served on the city council for 16 years and most recently was mayor pro-tem.

A 12-panel environmental health display created for the Environmental Public Health waiting room in the Center for Community Health, 1601 E Fourth Plain Boulevard, has won an a 2007 Excellence Award for the Clark County Public Information and Outreach office. The 46th annual Clark College Jazz Festival, showcasing 57 Washington and Oregon high school jazz bands and vocal groups, opened this morning in Gaiser Hall on the Clark College Fort Vancouver Way campus and continues through Saturday evening, Jan. 26. Primary competition continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with finals each evening at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 a day.
