It’s symphony quiz time again;
correct answers win free tickets

All right, class, it’s time to show your musical knowledge again and win free Vancouver Symphony tickets by answering the following question: How many opportunities did Beethoven have to play for Mozart before the latter’s death?

The first ten correct answers win two free admissions to either of the Vancouver Symphony concerts at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in the concert hall at Skyview High School, 1300 NW 139th Street.

The concerts, conducted by Vancouver Symphony artistic director Salvador Brotons, are Ludwig von Beethoven’s overture to Fidelio, Triple Concerto, and Symphony No. 7.

Soloists for the Triple Concerto are Michael Liu, Vancouver physician, at the piano, violinist Portland physicianThomas Hwang, and cellist Justin Kagan, formerly with the Metropolitan Orchestra. Kagan is also owner of Badbeard’s Microroastery in southwest Portland.

Send your quiz answers to thevso@vancouversymphony.org.

Clark Public Utilities among the first in the
nation to comply with reliability standards

Clark Public Utilities is in full compliance with North American Energy Reliability Commission reliability standards, which are being mandated by NERC for the U.S., Canada and parts of Mexico. The standards adopted in June last year have been in development since the 1965 New York City blackout.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission member Philip D. Moeller, who was unable to attend today’s utility commissioner meeting, said in a letter: “I am thrilled to hear about the progress of Clark Public Utilities in achieving full and unmitigated compliance with NERC standards. To hear this news about a utility in my home state of Washington adds to its significance.”

Clark Public Utilities has achieved compliance with 46 separate standards. The utility has, in addition, begun work on a utility compliance manual.

High capacity transit planners
evaluating intra-county corridors

The High Capacity Transit Study Task Force will begin evaluating five high capacity transit corridors at its next meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, in the 6th floor training room in the Public Service Center.

Under consideration are the following corridors: I-5/Highway 99, I-205, State Highway 14, State Highway 500, and the Chelatchie Prairie railroad right of way.

Corridors selected will serve as connectors to high-speed rapid transit between Washington and Oregon.

The study, being undertaken by the Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council, is being performed under the direction of a local task force representing community interests.

Prom dress donation drive underway

The Vancouver School District foundation’s Operation Fairy Godmother drive for donated prom dresses is underway. The culmination of the donated dress drive is a day-long dress event on Saturday, March 15, in

Westfield Vancouver Mall, where girls from Clark County high schools can get a new dress in trade for what they donated or, if they have no trade, for $10.

More than 1,000 dresses will be exchanged this year.

The project was started by the Vancouver School District Foundation in 2003. Over the past four years more than 3,000 girls throughout Clark County have found formal and semiformal dresses at Operation Fairy Godmother.

Dress drop-off sites are in most county high schools, Columbia Credit Union branches, Nordstrom’s Spanky’s, Hostess House/Bridal Arts, Lily Atelier, and the Jim Parsley Community Center. For further information, call Jan Redding, 313-4722. Deadline for dropping off dresses is Friday, March 7.
