Baird launches campaign for sixth term
U.S. Rep. Brian Baird (D-3rd) today announced he is a candidate for reelection to a sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Baird says, “It is a tremendous honor to represent the people of Southwest Washington in Congress and I am proud of the things we have accomplished together—restoring and defending sales tax deductibility, working to strengthen the economy and protect family wage jobs, fighting for lower energy prices, supporting small businesses, combating the plague of methamphetamine and leading the effort to enhance science and vocal education.” Baird has been particularly active in working the district. He has held more than 285 town hall meetings, visited every high school, port district, hospital in the region and has held hundreds of meetings with business, labor and community organizations. First elected to the House of Representatives in 1998, Baird currently serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Budget Committee. He is chairman of the Research and Education subcommittee of the of the House Committee on Science and Technology.
Port calls special meeting to
consider Port of Vancouver commissioners will discuss possible sale or lease of 58 acres of the light industrial Rufener property north of the Lower River Road during a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, March 4, in port offices 3103 NW Lower River Road. The potential purchaser or leaser is Seattle-based Sutherland Development, on behalf of an as-yet unnamed manufacturing company whose 600 to 800 employees would be paid living-wage jobs. Port policy in the past has been to lease property, not sell industrial sites. This could change. The 58 acres is but one parcel of the former Elmer Rufener farm acquired by the port four years ago. offers A community panel selected by the Vancouver Planning Commission will discuss the Columbia River Crossing Project in a public session at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in City Hall. This is an informal session of the planning commission and no decisions are to be made. Panel members are as follows: Matt Ranson, Vancouver transportation planning manager; Doug Ficco, Washington State Department of Transportation and Columbia Crossing project director; Jeff Hamm, executive director, C-TRAN; Dave Frei, Columbia River Crossing Task Force; Mark Masciarotte CRC Urban Design Advisory Group; Seanette Corkill, CRC Pedestrian & Bicycle Advisory Committee; and Roger Qualman, Identity Clark County board member. motorcycles, saves The city of Battle Ground has taken possession of two leased Harley Davidson police motorcycles, which will be used for daytime traffic patrol. The motorcycles are being leased from Columbia Harley Davidson, Vancouver, for a total of $800 a year and the city will turn the motorcycles in for new ones annually. The savings in costs of patrol cars will amount to $50,000 a year, according to Battle Ground police sergeant Jason Perdue. National Historic Visiting hours at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site are being increased to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, beginning with daylight savings time, Sunday, March 9. Visitor fees remain the same, $3 for adults, $5 per family. Children 15 years and younger are admitted free. The fort site is at 1001 E 5th Street. The gift shop is at on Officers Road, 2505 E Evergreen Boulevard. The gift shop has replicas of numbers of items that have been found at the historic site. There is no admission fee at the gift shop. In addition to the reconstructed Hudson’s Bay Company fort site and gift show, the National Park Service has recreational property and public parking along the Columbia River east of Who Song and Larry’s restaurant. The park service estimates that last year over 600,000 people visited national park sites in Vancouver.
