Baird launches campaign for sixth term

U.S. Rep. Brian Baird (D-3rd) today announced he is a candidate for reelection to a sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Baird says, “It is a tremendous honor to represent the people of Southwest Washington in Congress and I am proud of the things we have accomplished together—restoring and defending sales tax deductibility, working to strengthen the economy and protect family wage jobs, fighting for lower energy prices, supporting small businesses, combating the plague of methamphetamine and leading the effort to enhance science and vocal education.”

Baird has been particularly active in working the district. He has held more than 285 town hall meetings, visited every high school, port district, hospital in the region and has held hundreds of meetings with business, labor and community organizations.

First elected to the House of Representatives in 1998, Baird currently serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Budget Committee. He is chairman of the Research and Education subcommittee of the of the House Committee on Science and Technology.

Port calls special meeting to consider
prospect of 800 new living wage jobs

Port of Vancouver commissioners will discuss possible sale or lease of 58 acres of the light industrial Rufener property north of the Lower River Road during a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, March 4, in port offices 3103 NW Lower River Road.

The potential purchaser or leaser is Seattle-based Sutherland Development, on behalf of an as-yet unnamed manufacturing company whose 600 to 800 employees would be paid living-wage jobs.

Port policy in the past has been to lease property, not sell industrial sites. This could change.

The 58 acres is but one parcel of the former Elmer Rufener farm acquired by the port four years ago.
