Denis Hayes to keynote parks
foundation’s annual luncheon

Denis Hayes, co-founder of Earth Day, will be the keynote speaker at the Vancouver-Clark Parks & Recreation Foundation’s annual luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 12, in Water Resource Education Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way.

Hayes, a Camas native and executive director of the Seattle-based Bullitt Foundation, is a 1964 graduate of Clark College and recipient of the college's Outstanding Alumni Award.

Hayes is internationally recognized for expanding the Earth Day Network to more than 180 nations and continues to chair the board of the international Earth Day Network.

Admission to the annual meeting is $20 for members of the foundation, $25 for nonmembers. Payment and registration must be received in advance of the meeting. For further information, go to www.parksfoundation.us or call 693-7050.
 

St. Helens Volcano views and brews series
zeros in on 2004-2008 eruption period

Steve Shilling, U.S. Geological Survey, will describe the interaction between the Mount St. Helens lava dome and the crater glacier during the most recent eruption period, 2004-2008, during the Volcano Views and Brews presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the Lucky Labrador, 1945 NW Quimby Street, Portland.

While the Views and Brews series is aimed at the younger business crowd, persons of all ages are welcome, according to Jeannie Bennett, executive director of the series sponsor, the Mount St. Helens Institute.

Admission is $3. Doors open at 5 p.m., the program begins at 7 p.m. For further information, call Bennett at 891-5107.

exit strategies seminar

Vancouver businessmen Keith Cupp, Jeff Kraai and Randy Grove are presenting “Successful Exit Strategies: Maximizing the Value of Your Business—Preserving Your Wealth” from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 15, in the Hilton Vancouver Washington.

The seminar is designed for business owners and professional service providers who assist business owners with growth and sale of businesses.

Cupp is an executive coach with Executive Mentors and Trainers. Kraai is president of Exit Strategies. Grove is an estate planning attorney with Landerholm, Memovich, Lansverk & Whitesides.

Letter carries collecting food Saturday

Letter carriers throughout Clark County will join letter carriers across America to collect donations of nonperishable food from their postal customers during the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, Saturday, May 10.

Plastic food drive bags should be arriving in the mail this week. The bags may be returned Saturday filled with nutritious, nonperishable food. The collected food goes to the Oregon Food Bank, where it is distributed to communities in which it was collected.

This year's goal is to collect two-million pounds of food. Most wanted foods include: tuna fish, soups, stews, chili, canned fruits, vegetables, beans, rice and pasta. Do not include glass items, homemade items or previously opened containers. For more information or to make a cash donation, call (800) 777-7427.   

Vancouver School of Arts & Academics
is presenting
The Sound of Music

Over half of the Vancouver School of Arts & Academics student body is in the cast of the school’s production of the musical The Sound of Music, being presented beginning Thursday, May 8,in the Royal Durst Theatre in the school at 3101 Main Street.

The show, which includes a live band, is produced by the student body and Leslie Durst. Showtime is at 7 p.m. but a pre-show event begins in the school courtyard at 6 p.m. each evening.

Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 8, 9 and 10, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 15, 16 and 17. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens. For further information, call 313-4603.

News brief

Last Saturday over 320 people partied like rock stars in support of the YWCA Clark County, raising $142,350 for the local organization. The money will go to support prevention education as well as life-changing services for victims of child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault and homelessness. The YWCA assists more than 10,000 people each year throughout Clark County and the surrounding areas.
