Correctly answer the quiz to win free
tickets to the Vancouver Symphony

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra quiz question is: What other famous Russian composer was a roommate with Sergei Rachmaninoff during his conservatory days? Hint: he was also a brilliant pianist, but died relatively young.

Send your answers to: thevso@vancouversymphony.org. The first ten persons to return correct answers will each win a pair of tickets to this weekend’s Vancouver Symphony concert featuring internationally recognized soprano Charlotte Pistor singing Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs.

Pistor lives in Salzburg, Austria, with her husband and daughter but is a native of Portland and graduate of Portland State University. She won Metropolitan Opera auditions and continued a career from Austria and has sung throughout the world. Her parents live in Kalama.

Music director Salvador Brotons will conduct this weekend’s concerts at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17, and 7 p.m. Sunday, May 18, in the concert hall in Skyview High School, 1300 NW 139th Street. The concert closes with Rachmaninov’s Symphony #2.

Tickets range from $22 to $36. Student tickets are $7 each. For further information, call 735-7278.

Bravo! Vancouver presents
Meredith Willson’s
The Music Man

Bravo! Vancouver presents a concert version of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 400 S Andresen Road.

The acclaimed musical is the story of con-man Harold Hill who sells band instruments to parents of children in River City under the guise of creating a marching band. Hill falls in love with Marian Paroo and his scheme, but ultimately not the romance, unravels.

Michael Kissinger, Bravo! Vancouver artistic director, conducts the Washington Chamber Orchestra for the performance. Soloists are New York baritone Charlie Baad as Harold Hill and Seattle soprano Mary Jo DuGaw as “Marian the librarian” Paroo.

Admission is $20. Tickets are available at the door and through TicketsWest. For further information, call 906-0441.
