C-TRAN to take vote on Columbia
crossing alternatives Tuesday

C-TRAN, one of the key Clark County agencies that will help select the preferred alternative Columbia River I-5 crossing proposal being presented by the Columbia River Crossing Task Force, is expected to announce its preference during the transit agency’s regular meeting that begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, in the Rose Besserman Community Room in the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center.

C-TRAN’s board includes three Clark County commissioners and some members of the Vancouver City Council and other city councils in Clark County.

Vancouver's Free Clinic has added five new board members, according to Shirley Gross, Free Clinic development director.

The new members of the board are as follows: Jeffrey Fries, Vancouver Eye Care; Todd Horenstein, assistant superintendent Vancouver School District; Michael Strickland, Walgreen’s Pharmacy pharmacist; Tom Tucker, pastor of the Vancouver Heights Methodist Church; and Barbe West, executive director, Community Choices.

The Free Clinic provides free, basic health care to children and adults who are otherwise unable to access such services. Services are provided by medical and dental volunteers from the community, and include basic urgent health care, dental care, optical care, immunizations, prescription assistance, and coordinated specialty care through Project Access.

League of Women Voters and The Forum at the
Library to interview commissioner candidates

All seven candidates for Clark County commissioner, District 1, are scheduled to appear at a joint meeting of The Forum at the Library and the League of Women Voters of Clark County, at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 17, in the community room at Clark Public Utilities, 1200 Fort Vancouver Way.

The forum will be moderated by Gregg Herrington.

Candidates are Pam Brokaw, Democrat, Brad Lothspeich, Republican, Tom Mielke, Republican, Robert Nichols, Republican, Bridget Schwarz, Independent, Matt Swindell, Republican, and Craig Williams, Republican.

Free summer concerts cranking up

The first in a series of free outdoor summer concerts is a concert by the Vancouver Pops Orchestra, sponsored by the law firm of Terry Lee, at noon, Wednesday, July 9, in Esther Short Park.

Riverview Community Bank’s series of evening concerts leads off with 5 Guys Names Moe, at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 10, in Esther Short Park.

Food vendors are on hand at each of the concerts.

News brief

An outdoor burning ban affecting all of Clark County except federal property goes into effect at midnight, Tuesday, July 15, reports Clark County fire marshal Jon Dunaway. The burning ban is expected to last through  September 30. The exception to the ban is recreational campfires, which are allowed in designated campgrounds and on private land when the fire site is built to county specifications. For further information, call 397-2186.
