County Bar Association ballot A Clark County Bar Association poll conducted Wednesday overwhelmingly favors incumbent Clark County superior court judges Robert L. Harris and John P. Wulle. The Bar’s judicial preference poll gave Harris 212 votes. His opponent, David W. Evans, received 23 votes. Wulle collected 205 votes, compared to 23 votes for his opponent, Ernest M. Edsel. Of the nine superior court judges up for re-election this year, Harris and Wulle are the only two who are opposed. The judicial election will be decided by the Tuesday, Aug. 19, primary. Ballots for the primary election are in the mail.
Neighbors on Watch classes to begin Vancouver residents interested in making their neighborhoods safer are encouraged to apply for the Vancouver Police Department's new volunteer program called Neighbors On Watch. NOW volunteers patrol their neighborhoods on foot, bicycle, or personal vehicle. They are trained in observation skills, police radio communications, criminal law, crime detection and prevention, patrol procedures, first aid, CPR and AED, among other relevant topics. Pairs of trained citizen volunteers, equipped with police radios, patrol city streets and report their observations to another volunteer operating a "base" location with a radio. The base station location is in a private home of a NOW member. Information is relayed to proper authorities. However, volunteers are prohibited from taking any type of enforcement action or making contact with a possible violator Classes for volunteers will be held during October and include at least 24 hours of classroom training. All volunteer applicants must successfully pass a screening process which includes: criminal background investigation, fingerprints, interviews, and reference check. Alan Ludlow has been appointed senior vice president and commercial lending officer in the downtown Vancouver office of the Bank of Clark County. Ludlow holds a masters degree in business administration from the University of Utah and is a graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School. A veteran northwest banker, Ludlow is a past president of the West Linn Rotary Club and treasurer of the West Linn Chamber of Commerce. 3,300 already signed up for walking program Nearly 3,300 Clark County residents are leaving their cars behind, saving gasoline money, improving their health and enjoying quality time with family members by joining Community Choices Take 10 campaign, according to Community Choices spokesperson Charlene Welch. Take 10 is a summer campaign inviting people to take ten trips by foot they would normally take by car and to keep track of those trips to be eligible for Fred Meyer gift cards. Moderator is Steve Horenstein. Questioners are Julia Anderson, John White, and James Howsley. Seven candidates are running for retiring commissioner Betty Sue Morris’s position in District 1. Incumbent Republican Marc Boldt is a candidate for re-election in District 2, as are Martyn Butler, no party preference, and Vancouver councilwoman Jeanne Harris, Democrat. The forum is sponsored by the Vancouver Miller Nash law firm. Tickets are $35 each and include a continental breakfast.
