County Bar Association ballot
heavily favors Harris and Wulle

A Clark County Bar Association poll conducted Wednesday overwhelmingly favors incumbent Clark County superior court judges Robert L. Harris and John P. Wulle.

The Bar’s judicial preference poll gave Harris 212 votes. His opponent, David W. Evans, received 23 votes.  Wulle collected 205 votes, compared to 23 votes for his opponent, Ernest M. Edsel.

Of the nine superior court judges up for re-election this year, Harris and Wulle are the only two who are opposed.

The judicial election will be decided by the Tuesday, Aug. 19, primary. Ballots for the primary election are in the mail.

Neighbors on Watch classes to begin

Vancouver residents interested in making their neighborhoods safer are encouraged to apply for the Vancouver Police Department's new volunteer program called Neighbors On Watch.

NOW volunteers patrol their neighborhoods on foot, bicycle, or personal vehicle. They are trained in observation skills, police radio communications, criminal law, crime detection and prevention, patrol procedures, first aid, CPR and AED, among other relevant topics.

Pairs of trained citizen volunteers, equipped with police radios, patrol city streets and report their observations to another volunteer operating a "base" location with a radio. The base station location is in a private home of a NOW member. Information is relayed to proper authorities.

However, volunteers are prohibited from taking any type of enforcement action or making contact with a possible violator

Classes for volunteers will be held during October and include at least 24 hours of classroom training. All volunteer applicants must successfully pass a screening process which includes: criminal background investigation, fingerprints, interviews, and reference check.

For further information, call volunteer services coordinator Kelly Mott at 487-7467. Application deadline for the next training academy is August 15, 2008.
