Vancouver’s Eric Perkins going
for distance in Red Bull Flugtag

This is how it looked four years ago at the first Red Bull Flugtag at Portland’s Tom McCall Waterfront Park, where 30 teams splashed into the Willamette River in quest of distance and entertainment prizes.

Saturday afternoon, clad in a special set of underwear, Vancouver's Eric Perkins will dance his way into the cockpit of a homemade replica of an F-14 Tomcat, and, with the help of a crew of four, including Marc Groth, also of Vancouver, he will be launched from a platform 30 feet above the Willamette River at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. And that's no bull.

It is Red Bull Flugtag, the outrageous human-powered flying competition, returning to the park at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, after a four-year layover. Thirty-one teams have been selected to strut, soar and ultimately splash into the Willamette’s waters.

There is no charge for viewing the event. Competition begins at 1 p.m.

Perkins, now a mortgage banker in Portland, was a Washington State University Vancouver student when he crewed for a team at the first Red Bull Flugtag held in Portland four years ago. That team won second and third prizes.

Teams will be going for distance. The flight distance record is 195 feet. But they’ll also be judged on

creativity and showmanship. The first-place finishers will win a trip to Salzburg, Austria, where they’ll have a tour of Hangar-7. Second place will receive a VIP trip to a Red Bull Air Race World Series U.S. stop, and third prize is skydiving with the Red Bull Air Force.

Perkins’ girlfriend, Kristin Ratliff, former Portland Trail Blazer dancer, has choreographed the dance that the crew will offer before putting Perkins in the replica Tomcat made from aluminum and parachute cloth.

The first Red Bull Flugtag was held in Vienna in 1991. Since then, more than 40 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the world, from London to San Francisco, attracting up to 300,000 spectators at one event.

Red Bull is an international carbonated energy drink with sales of over $3 billion. The first Flugtag took place in 1991 in Vienna, Austria, as the brainchild of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz.
