Thursday entertainment at the fair
—Extreme Big Air Motorcycles

Billed as motorcycle riders who perform tricks while taking their cycles as high as 100 feet in the air, Extreme Big Air Motorcycles entertain at 7:30 p.m. this evening at the Clark County Fair.

All fair entertainment is free with admission to the fair, which is $9 per person. Parking is $5. C-TRAN is proving round-trip shuttle service to and from the fair for $2; $4 for groups of up to six.

The Clark County fair concludes Sunday, Aug. 10.

Medical Center’s Behavioral
Health Services 25 years old

Southwest Washington Medical Center, the only provider of hospital-based mental health care in Clark County, is celebrating 25 years of that service this month.

The program first opened in August 1983. Since then, the inpatient unit has operated at near-full capacity.

Despite the demand for services, Behavioral Health Services operates at a financial loss which is subsidized by the hospital, according to Christine Rosanski, BHS director.

The main reasons for the loss are low insurance payments for mental health services and the hospital's mission to treat patients regardless of ability to pay, says Michael Bernstein, physician director for BHS. He adds that poor reimbursement rates mean Southwest is projected to provide an annual subsidy of $2.1 million in 2008.

Southwest’s Inpatient Psychiatric Service provides treatment for approximately 700 patients a year. The average length of stay is 7.1 days in 2008, down from 7.3 days last year.

“Our focus continues to be to help people in their recovery and their return to the community,” says Rosanski. “Our seasoned team of professionals works to educate the people we serve and their families in crisis stabilization and in the belief that true recovery is possible with the right support.”

The behavioral health services are offered in the medical center's 14-bed unit in the Memorial Campus at 3400 Main Street.

No Chrysler Imperials allowed

That’s right. That’s what the rules say: “No Chrysler Imperials allowed,” according to Northwest Sports 2008 Demolition Derby rules for the Friday, Aug. 8, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Destruction Derbies at the Clark County Fair.

OK, either the Chrysler Imperials fall apart at the first hit or they are made of a steel and krypton alloy. Wikipedia provides the answer: “The 1964-1966 Chrysler Imperial achieved near-legendary status for its crashworthiness, and is still banned from most demolition derby events.”

The grand prize for each demolition derby winner is $1,500. Entry fees are $45 each. Drivers must be at least 16.

Tonight’s featured entertainment is at 7:30 p.m. and is billed as Extreme Big Air Motorcycles.

The county fair continues through Sunday, Aug. 10.

Bistro at the Clark County Fair
is known as North Bank Bistro

We were caught again at giving out erroneous and misleading information. This time we misnamed the new bistro at the Clark County Fair Northwest Bistro, when actually it is the North Bank Bistro, having been so named because of the sponsorship relationship with the North Bank Magazine, a publication of the Vancouver Business Journal. The North Bank Magazine focuses on Southwest Washington’s emerging urban lifestyles. The North Bank Bistro at the fair focuses on northwest food, Washington wine and northwest micro brews.

Calendar

The Beatniks entertain at 6 p.m. this evening in Esther Short Park as part of the Riverview Community Bank’s free Six-to-Sunset Concerts in the Park. Food vendors are on-hand. <> Rivkah Loewus is leading a poetry workshop at 7 p.m. this evening in the Vancouver Community Library, 1007 E Mill Plain Boulevard.
