Nick Haindl named Port of
Vancouver
Nick Haindl has joined the marine department at the Port of Vancouver as marketing manager, according to the port’s senior director of marketing and operations, Alastair Smith. Haindl joins the port to manage marketing duties that include maintaining relationships with existing customers, developing new cargos and customers, and marketing the port globally for near-term and long-term growth. Before coming to the port, Haindl was the site manager for Ports America (formerly Marine Terminals Corporation) at the Vancouver terminal for five years. He had been with Ports America for a total of 11 years and is extremely familiar with the port and its customer base. A native of
London, Ontario, Haindl is a graduate of the University of Western
Ontario. Volcano hiking on tap Keith Dubanevich will offer insights into climbing Pacific Northwest volcanoes and other mountains throughout the world at the Volcano Views and Brews presentation Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Lucky Labrador, 1945 NW Quimby Street, Portland, reports Jeanne Bennett, executive director of the Mount St. Helens Institute. Dubanevich is past president of the Mazamas, a 116-year old mountaineering organization founded on the top of Mt. Hood. The Mazamas has been integral to the formation and preservation of many of our parks, including Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainier and Crater Lake National Parks, and Forest Park in Portland. Volcano Views and Brews are held on the third Tuesday of each month. Tickets are $3 and available at the door. Food and beverages cost extra. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the speaker will begin at 7 p.m. All ages are welcome, says Bennett. Further information is available at www.mshinstitute.org. CRESA up for accreditation, The Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency, the local organization that oversees 9-1-1 calls, is being inspected by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies later this month, according to CRESA assistant director John Talbot. As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and the public are invited to make comments to the commission between 1 and 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, by calling (360) 992-6279. CRESA has to comply with 218 standards in order to retain accredited status. Humane Society responding Last Saturday Humane Society for Southwest Washington employees and volunteers distributed 1,213 pounds of dog and cat food to people who were struggling to feed their pets, reports Chuck Tourtillott, executive director of the society. According to Tourtillott, Saturday was the first day of a new program. “There is a need in the struggling economy to take steps to help keep families together by providing an alternative to surrendering animals,” Tourtillott says, adding, “We don’t want people surrendering their pets simply because they can’t afford to feed them.” The local Humane Society will offer free pet food to those in needed, Tourtillott says. Thus the new Lend a Paw program was born. Those who can are urged to bring un-opened cat, dog, puppy and kitten food donations to the Humane Society, 2121 St. Francis Lane, seven days a week. Also being accepted is food for rabbits, birds, hamsters and other similar pets. For further information, call 693-4746. Huckleberry permits available While permits are not required for recreational huckleberry picking, commercial pickers must have permits to pick the berries in the national forest, says Gifford Pinchot National Forest spokesperson Chris Strebig. Commercial permits are $40 each and may be acquired at at ranger district offices and the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument headquarters.
