Keith Dubanevich will offer insights into climbing Pacific Northwest volcanoes and other mountains throughout the world at the Volcano Views and Brews presentation Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Lucky Labrador, 1945 NW Quimby Street, Portland, reports Jeanne Bennett, executive director of the Mount St. Helens Institute.

The Mazamas has been integral to the formation and preservation of many of our parks, including Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainier and Crater Lake National Parks, and Forest Park in Portland.

Volcano Views and Brews are held on the third Tuesday of each month. Tickets are $3 and available at the door. Food and beverages cost extra. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the speaker will begin at 7 p.m. All ages are welcome, says Bennett.

Humane Society responding
local to pet food needs

Last Saturday Humane Society for Southwest Washington employees and volunteers distributed 1,213 pounds of dog and cat food to people who were struggling to feed their pets, reports Chuck Tourtillott, executive director of the society.

According to Tourtillott, Saturday was the first day of a new program. “There is a need in the struggling economy to take steps to help keep families together by providing an alternative to surrendering animals,” Tourtillott says, adding, “We don’t want people surrendering their pets simply because they can’t afford to feed them.”

The local Humane Society will offer free pet food to those in needed, Tourtillott says. Thus the new Lend a Paw program was born.

Those who can are urged to bring un-opened cat, dog, puppy and kitten food donations to the Humane Society, 2121 St. Francis Lane, seven days a week. Also being accepted is food for rabbits, birds, hamsters and other similar pets. For further information, call 693-4746.

Non-commercial huckleberry pickers may pick up to three gallons of the berries per year. For further information, call 891-5005, or go to www.fs.fed.us/gpn/recreation/huckleberries.
