Daughter follows father
to chamber leadership

It may have happened somewhere sometime, but never before in the 119-year history of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce has a daughter of a former chairman of the chamber become chairman of that organization.

Last night Lisa Dow, a banker with West Coast Bank, was installed as chair of Vancouver’s venerable organization of business people and activists. In 1994, Dow’s father, Lee Stenseth, a former banker, was elected and served as the chamber’s chairman.

Stenseth was president of the Bank of Vancouver, formed in 1989, which later became a part of West Coast Bank.

Serving with Dow for the coming year are the following officers: chair-elect Don Russo, Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt; vice chair Jeff Woodside Nutter Corporation; secretary/treasurer David A. Horowitz, David A. Horowitz, CPA; and immediate past chair Carmen Villarma, The Management Group.

Mary Firstenburg Center
grand opening is Friday

Innovative Service’s $7.3 million Mary Firstenburg Family Center, 9414 NE Fourth Plain Boulevard, will be dedicated during ceremonies that begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. The Firstenburg Family Foundation contributed $1 million to the capital campaign.

Innovative Services will also recognize Rick Bowler and Marilee Thompson for their gifts and leadership during the campaign, which will enter a public phase with a goal of raising an additional $300,000.

Innovative Services, a 45-year-old local organization, serves over 750 children, adults and families with disabilities and other disadvantages. The nonprofit organization operates the largest pediatric therapy clinic in Clark County. It is the second largest custodial service provider in the county. The organization has a contract with all Clark County school districts to provide early intervention services.

Innovative Services provides community services that include the following: childcare and preschool for children of all ability and income levels; speech, occupational, physical and education therapy; respite care supervised visitations, parenting classes and foster youth transitions; employment services, including job placement and on-the-job training; and senior services offering adults and seniors day-time assistance.

Jobless rolls increasing in county

Clark County's jobless rate was estimated at 8.2 percent in August, more than a full percentage point higher than July and almost two points higher than a year ago, according to Scott Bailey, regional economist for the state Employment Security Department. That rate is the highest since the August 2003 rate of 10.3 percent.

About 17,760 county residents were jobless and looking for work during August. The number of unemployment claimants declined slightly over the month, as is typical for this time of year, but was 33 percent higher than a year ago, Bailey says.

Construction employment rose by 200 jobs in August, 100 below the usual seasonal hiring trend. The total of 12,700 was 700 jobs less than a year ago (-5.2 percent). Residential construction continued to be slow, pointing towards the weakest year since 1984

The biggest drop in employment during August was from the loss of 2,100 jobs due to summer layoffs of non-tenured school personnel. Leisure and hospitality employment added 300 jobs in food services, and jobs in the financial sector were up by 100 in August.
