Dennis Huston returns to Clark
Dennis Huston, all-star member of the 1960-61 Clark College Penguin basketball team who retired from college basketball coaching as head coach at Weber State College in 1991, has been named interim athletic director at Clark College, reports Clark College president Bob Knight. “Dennis is a legend here at Clark and throughout the region,” Knight said. Huston succeeds Lisa Quednow-Bickler, who has moved away from southern Washington. As a student, Huston, who now lives in Camas, served as president of the Associated Students of Clark College. Huston earned a masters degree from Western Washington University. He returned to Clark and served as assistant and, subsequently, head basketball coach for four years. Future coaching positions took him to the University of Washington, University of Wyoming, Stanford University and, finally, Weber State. Huston, who received the Clark College Outstanding Alumni Award in 2005, is a member of the Clark College Foundation and the Penguin Athletic Club. Southwest Washington Center
for The former Lucky Lager brewery block kitty-corner from Esther Short Park has been eliminated from the list of potential Southwest Washington Center For the Arts sites due to the costs associated with building structured parking and the downturn in the economy, which could have impacted the sale of the condominiums proposed to be co-located with the performing arts center. Val Ogden, SWCA chair, said today that one of the sites now being considered is in the Vancouver National Historic Reserve. That site is owned by the city and is currently occupied by the city police department administration. According to Elson Strahan, president and CEO of the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust, says, “We believe we can work in partnership with SWCA on programs and events.” SWCA also has been meeting with Gramor Development and has been reviewing the former Boise Cascade waterfront plans to determine compatibility and feasibility for an arts center there. SWCA has investigated a number of potential sites over the last five years. Possibilities have included Clark College, WSU Vancouver, the former brewery block near Esther Short Park, and the Vancouver waterfront. Ogden concludes: “We appreciated the city’s willingness to consider a developmental hold agreement for the empty former brewery block. While that site did not work out, the city has expressed its willingness to continue to work with SWCA to find a location.” Jim Haden named nLIGHT COO Jim Haden has been named chief operating officer for nLIGHT Corporation, according to Scott Keeney, nLIGHT’s president and chief executive officer. Haden holds a masters degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California. Vancouver-based nLIGHT Corporation is a leading supplier of high-power semiconductor lasers and high-performance fibers. New owners of 1220 Main

No safe side to err on We don’t comment on all the errors we make in the Daily Insider, and we do appreciate the comments we get from readers. Got a couple yesterday that deserve responses because they represent small numbers made to big and big numbers too small. First we reported that Cheryl DeHaan, newly promoted vice president at the Bank of Clark County, had 125 years’ banking experience, which turns out is more than DeHaan and bank CEO Mike Worthy have collectively. DeHaan actually has 25 years’ banking experience. We also regret that we misspelled DeHaan (DeHann). The very next day we reported that the Firstenburg Family Foundation made a $1 donation to Innovative Services Mary Firstenburg Center. Actually the donation was $1 million. Calendar The West Hazel Dell Neighborhood Association meets at 6:30 p.m. this evening in the Clearwater Springs Assisted Living Center, 201 NW 78th Street.
