Main Street switching to two-way traffic tomorrow

The southern portion of Main Street will switch from one-way to two-way traffic late on Saturday, Nov. 15, as long as the weather cooperates.

Prior to the switch, crews must first paint new traffic lane and parking lines, a job highly dependent upon weather conditions. Based on the most up-to-date weather forecasts, they’ll tackle the job on Saturday.

The current schedule anticipates the following to take place this Saturday on Main Street, between Sixth and 15th streets:

The street will be closed to all traffic, except emergency vehicles.

Starting at 5 a.m. Saturday, parking will not be allowed and all cars must be removed to allow for the striping of parking stalls.

Intersections and east/west streets, as well as sidewalks throughout, will remain open.

At the end of the street-and-parking striping day, the one-way signs on Main Street will be taken down. Signage will be placed throughout the project alerting drivers and pedestrians to changes in the traffic pattern.

Though impacts of the past Gulf Coast hurricane have affected delivery time of that equipment, the conversion to two-way is being done now, at the request of businesses. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to proceed cautiously and be especially mindful of other vehicles and pedestrians during this transition to two-way traffic.

Signal work will be completed when the new equipment arrives. The city will also convert C Street from one-way to two-way traffic at that time. Combining the two, Main and C streets, reduces project costs and allows better control of construction activity in the downtown area.
