Port of Vancouver completes
212-acre Alcoa purchase

The Port of Vancouver today acquired the former Alcoa Columbia River property. The 218 acres will be turned into the port’s new Terminal 5. At full build-out, Terminal 5 could bring as many as 1,000 new jobs to the community, according to port executive director Larry Paulson.

The purchase was completed with the proceeds from limited general obligation bonds sold in the aggregate of $47.55 million. In addition to the Alcoa property purchase, the bond sale will finance major construction projects, including the West Vancouver Freight Access rail project.

Construction of a unit train rail facility, and wind energy storage area are expected to begin later this year.

Expansion of the port’s rail system and development of new port industrial and marine properties also will bring new jobs, both short term and long term, and the preservation of wetlands, the creation of enhanced wildlife habitat, and make way for more green sustainable business partners operating from the port, Paulson said.
