Nancy Denny & Dana Ostenson
Honored for 30 years of Critical Care

Southwest Washington Medical Center nurses Nancy Denny and Dana Ostenson have been honored for maintaining certifications as critical care nurses  for 30 straight years.

Denny began her career in critical care 42 years ago and has been with Southwest for 35 of those years. Ostenson followed in her mother’s footsteps in nursing and began her career as a nurse’s aide and has been a critical care nurse for over 35 years—more than 30 years at Southwest.

Since 1979, the two nurses have consistently maintained CCRN certification through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. They are two of 108 CCRNs honored this year nationally by AACN for their continuous certification.

Nearly all Battle Ground
certified school jobs kept

Of 77 Battle School District certificated personnel who received reduction in force letters in May, 73 have been offered jobs in the district, although some in different schools, some teaching different subjects or grade levels and some in part-time rather than full-time jobs reports Marcia Christian, the district’s human resources director.

It is still possible that some or all of the remaining four also will be offered jobs, she added.

However, there will be approximately 32 fewer certificated positions in the Battle Ground district in the 2009-10 school year, resulting in slightly larger class sizes and some courses offered fewer times per day or not at all. Those details won’t be set until closer to the start of the school year on Sept. 9.

Suffrage exhibit opens in Vancouver

“Catharine Paine Blaine: Seneca Falls and The Women’s Rights Movement in the State of Washington,” a traveling exhibit that celebrates the 2010 Washington Women’s Suffrage Centennial through an exploration of the effect of settlers’ reform ideas on the development of women’s rights in Washington State, is opening during the Clark County Historical Museum’s. first Thursday Museum After Hours Celebration, July 2. Admission is free.

Washington was an early leader in women’s suffrage and passed a voting law 10 years before the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920.

The exhibit, which runs through the end of the year, is a joint project of Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y., and the Washington State Historical Society.

United Way funds Re-Entry Housing
for the third year in Clark County

United Way of the Columbia-Willamette has awarded a third $148,000 Second Step Housing community investment grant to Vancouver’s Re-Entry Housing Program.

In collaboration with Community Services Northwest and Department of Corrections, the program helps individuals achieve stable housing and living-wage employment as they reconnect with the community after incarceration.

SSH was awarded $148,000 each year for three years, which will enable the program to house approximately 18 high-risk, ex-offenders every 12 months.

Last year, SSH and CSNW partnered on a re-entry pilot program funded through the Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development (CTED) which had a self-sufficiency success rate of over 90 percent.

WSDOT provides traffic assistance

Declare your independence from travel delays by using the Washington State Department of Transportation’s  website to find up-to-date travel information.

WSDOT offers traffic information on its Web site, www.wsdot.wa.gov, and on the 24-hour traveler information line, 5-1-1.

Drivers should expect longer-than-typical wait times at ferry docks most
of the holiday weekend. Travel times are significantly lighter Thursday
morning and on Monday.

On I-5, we typically see a significant increase in traffic near the Canadian border crossing and in the area south of Olympia into Lewis County, WSDOT officials say.
