Avaly Mobbs

Mobbs earns leadership designation

Avaly Mobbs, executive director of the Building Industry Association of Clark County, has graduated from the Institute for Organization Management, a four-year nonprofit leadership training program at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.

Mobbs, recently named executive director of the BIA, has been participating in the on-going leadership guidance program for the past four years.

Graduates complete 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management. In addition, participants earn points toward the Certified Chamber Executive or Certified Association Executive certifications.

“Institute graduates are recognized across the country as leaders in their communities,” says Raymond P. Towle, U.S. Chamber’s vice president of Institute for Organization Management.

Vancouver Symphony
names four directors

Verdella Whareham, Gilda Ciraulo, Bill Barron and Mary Martin have been elected to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra board of directors, symphony board chair Betty Sue Morris has announced.

A long-time educator, Whareham has been a teacher and principal in the Battle Ground School District, as well as an adjunct professor and field supervisor at Washington State University Vancouver. She has been a long-time volunteer and Friend of The Vancouver Symphony, a volunteer and board member of SWIFT and a volunteer with Columbia River Mental Health. Her husband, Bob, is an executive with Wells Fargo, and they have two daughters who live in the Seattle area.

Ciraulo is project manager at Westby Associates, a consulting firm for nonprofits, after having spent eleven years at Alaska Airlines. She gained consulting and event management experience as the former owner of Heart and Soul Events and as manager of the successful 2008 election campaign of Washington State Representative Jim Jacks. Gilda has a history of volunteer service, most recently with the Lewis River Rotary Club, the North Clark County Community Food Bank and the Battle Ground chapter of Loaves and Fishes. She and her husband, Mike, were named citizens of the year in 2008. They have two grown sons.

Barron is now in his eleventh year as Clark County administrator. He has held government positions for the past thirty-seven years. Even as a lifetime public servant, Barron focuses on community service. He is currently a member of the Vancouver Rotary, vice president of the Columbia Land Trust Board of Directors and a member of the WSU Vancouver Advisory Council. Bill holds a masters degree in political science and is the father of three adult children. He and his wife, Janet, commute between Vancouver and Boise, where Janet is the executive director of the Idaho Historical Society.

Martin was raised in Portland and taught school for many years, following her graduation from Marylhurst College. She later became the director of family health services at Stanford University Hospital. Mary has spent much of her career in health services and has long been involved in philanthropy, having worked extensively with the Children’s Trust Fund of Clark County. She has also been involved with the Clean Water Commission for eight years.
