Whitewater guides celebrate silver anniversary Mark Zoller and Richard Schneider, "The Rooster."In the summer of 1985, on the rapids of the White Salmon River, Mark Zoller and Richard Schneider, aka “The Rooster,” began their careers as whitewater river guides on the Wild & Scenic White Salmon River. Twenty-five summers later, Zoller and Schneider are celebrating their silver anniversary. Making a living as a whitewater river guide is a difficult task that required both men to be creative in their approach to careers. In the early years Zoller used the whitewater opportunity to complement his part-time job at UPS, where he supervised on the night shift. Eventually UPS became full-time and Zoller was restricted to weekend guiding only until the spring of 2001, when he purchased Zoller’s Outdoor Odysseys rafting company from his father, Phil Zoller, and turned rafting into a 12 months - a - year, full - time career. The Rooster started working for the Zoller family in 1985 and has been a mainstay of leadership and river savvy. The Rooster also owns Gorge Metal Arts and Sierra Madre Motorcycle Tours. Zoller’s Outdoor Odysseys is headquartered on the shore of the White Salmon River, 1248 Hwy 141, White Salmon, WA 98672. For more information, visit www.ZooRaft.com.
Carter Park Neighborhood Association celebrates new park The new Brickyard Neighborhood Park opened with a dedication with neighbors, association leaders and local officials in attendance. Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation Department Director Pete Mayer facilitated the brief ceremony that featured Mayor Royce Pollard, Park and Recreation Advisory Commissioner Roy Heikkela, city staff, and the Carter Park Neighborhood Association leaders Glenna Rose and Eric Daniels. The park is the result of true partnership and collaboration between the City and the Carter Park Neighborhood Association. Association members actively worked to raise funds for the project. They wrote and were awarded a City Community Development Block Grant in 2007, which allowed Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation to move forward with design and construction of the park. The City provided matching funds through the Park Impact Fee program. The two-acre park has a variety of play equipment, basketball court and an open lawn area. The park is in the 3200 block of NW Lincoln Avenue. Families can easily access the park via a path from 32nd Street. Find information about this and other parks at www.vanclarkparks-rec.org.
