Southwest
Washington Visitors Bureau launches new brand

Vancouver,
Washington is the fourth largest and oldest city in the state but
continues to be confused with the Canadian city. Today, the
Southwest Washington Convention & Visitors Bureau launched a new
brand, "Visit Vancouver USA Discover the Original," complete with a
new logo.
"I am confident
that this brand will begin clearing up the confusion between the
Canadian city and our city, which was really reinforced during the
2010 Winter Olympics," said Gerry Link, manager of the Hilton
Vancouver Washington and the convention center. Tourism in Clark
County provides more than 4,000 jobs and generates more than $421
million annually in direct spending to the local economy. There are
2,600 guestrooms available in the community. The new brand was
developed with input from regional community and civic leaders,
local business owners and representatives from the hospitality
industry. Meeting
planners and travelers who had requested Visitors Guides were also
surveyed.
The bureau has
a new name as well and will now be known as the Vancouver USA
Regional Tourism Office. The organization’s mission is to promote
both Vancouver and Clark County by increasing convention and visitor
business.
Residents encouraged
to support Google4Vancouver
Vancouver
residents have the power to determine if the city will be chosen for
a project that could increase internet speeds up to 100 times
faster.
Search engine
company Google plans to install fiber optic networks in the cities
chosen for the “Google Fiber for Communities” project. Part of the
application includes gauging community interest.
“People are
encouraged to register their support by going to the City’s Web site
at
www.cityofvancouver.us. or go to the special Facebook page
Google4Vancouver,” said Patrick
Gilbride, the city’s Information Technology manager. The
deadline for applications is March 26.
Vancouver Mayor
Tim Leavitt talked about the
project in his State of the City address on March 4.
“Not only would
more access to high-speed internet and greater bandwidth solidify
Vancouver’s position in the Silicon Forest, it will drive job growth
and give people another reason to live, work and most importantly,
stay here in the Vancouver-Clark County region, “ Leavitt said.
