Work begins on “worst crossing” after Columbia River, the 134th
Street project
Clark County Commissioner Betty Sue Morris and U.S. Rep. Brian
Baird shovel up dirt to officially begin nearly $100 million
reconstruction of the I-5/Salmon Creek Interchange at NE 134th
Street. State Sens. Don Carlson and Don Benton also
participated.
Clark County
commissioner Betty Sue Morris
and U.S. Rep. Brian Baird
(D-3rd) were among dignitaries shoveling the first dirt to begin
a nearly $100 million project to bring relief to what some say
is the second worst transportation crossing after the Columbia
River in Clark County, the Interstate 5-Salmon Creek Interchange
at 134th Street.
The first segment of
planned improvements is the relocation of NE Highway 99 at NE
20th Avenue that will be completed early in 2006 at a cost of
$12.6 million.
All but $18 million
of the total $95.7 million reconstruction project is already
funded. Nearly half the cost is being paid for through a
recently enacted 5-cent-a-gallon gasoline tax increase.
The final segments of the
massive project are not expected to be completed until the end
of the decade.
The NE 134th Street
interchanges with I-5 and I-205 serve both Washington State
University Vancouver and Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital, which is
expected to be in full operation by the middle of next year.
Actually bigger than
it looks, Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital is now a year from
completion
Construction is continuing at Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital.

above ground and the 46,000-square-foot hospital, just off NE
134th Street, will be will be seven stories tall.
