Wine and Jazz Festival line-up

Dirty Dozen Brass Band

The 12th Annual Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival is August 21, 22, 23, 2009. This year’s festival features a diverse lineup of vocal jazz, New Orleans, Latin, fusion and pop/crossover artists. The slate of major bands includes Grammy-winning artists—as well as some of the music icons of the past 40 years: WAR, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Judy Collins, Spyro Gyra, Rita Coolidge, Allen Toussaint, and 4-time Grammy-winning trumpet virtuoso Arturo Sandoval.

In addition to the great music, the festival features over 200 wines from around the world. Attendees can sample wines, or purchase a glass to sip with food from 9 restaurants. Cuisine ranges from Northwest shrimp and crab to gourmet pizza to Tex-Mex.  Art lovers can shop the 50 fine artists from California, Idaho, Washington & Oregon. “Our goal is to create a rich artistic environment, a palate from which people can sample and hear great music, drink a nice Northwest wine, purchase a piece of art, and just immerse themselves in an arts-rich weekend” says, Michael Kissinger, artistic director.

Ticket prices are: Friday $20; Saturday $25; Sunday $25.  3-Day passes are $50 advance, $60 gate. Tickets can be purchased at TicketsWest, www.ticketswest.com, or 503-224-8499 or 1-800-992-8499.  Kids under 12 are free with paid adults. Seating is General Admission.  Blankets & low-back sand chairs are encouraged. NO outside food or beverages allowed. For more information see www.vancouverwinejazz.com or call 360-906-0441.

BPA rate increase smaller than expected

Bonneville Power October rate increase will be smaller than expected, reports Clark Public Utilities General Manager Wayne Nelson. Nelson says, “That while we would’ve preferred no increase at all, the news wasn’t all that bad.” BPA has agreed to split the increase over two years, as suggested by Clark Public Utilities, Seattle   City Light, and industrial customers.

The increase, which will average about 7% overall, but will be about 4.5% if Clark Public Utilities select the two-part The BPA rate change, will be effective October 1. Nelson says, “We’ll look at the impact of the increase during preparation of the 2010 budget later this year to determine if the retail rates need to increase.”

“Natural gas prices have been falling, and we’ve held the line on other expenditures, which should cushion the impact.” Nelson says he doesn’t expect any rate changes during 2009.

81st Brigade returns from supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom

Gov. Chris Gregoire joined Maj. Gen. Timothy J. Lowenberg, families and friends in welcoming home approximately 150 citizen soldiers from the Washington National Guard's 81st Brigade Combat Team.

Gregoire and Lowenberg met soldiers immediately on their arrival on the flight line at McChord Air Force base. From there the soldiers gathered for a welcome home ceremony and to meet their loved ones at the Wilson Gym on North Fort Lewis.

“It is such a joy to welcome the soldiers home from their harrowing experience fighting for our country,” said Gregoire. “I promised them last summer I would be here to support them and their families and I am honored to do just that.”

“The 81st accomplished their mission and performed admirably, as we knew they would. We also continue to reflect upon the service of every soldier we have lost, most recently Specialist Samuel Stone. Their memory and dedication to duty will live on with our citizen soldiers forever,” said Lowenberg.

The 81st entered federal active duty on August 18, 2008. After conducting pre-deployment training at the Yakima Training Center and Fort McCoy, they deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Missions for 81st units in Iraq typically focused on convoy security, force protection, provincial reconstruction and base operations.

News brief

Increasing temperatures throughout the Pacific Northwest have cut down on American Red Cross donations. The current heat wave has left the Red Cross struggling to schedule blood donor appointments, and nearly 20 percent of those who do schedule a time to donate do not show up for their appointment. The American Red Cross is asking all eligible blood donors to make a special effort to donate blood during this critical time. Go to www.givelife.org.
